coil springs??

I just happen to have a set of stock springs for my car sitting around. Has anyone on here cut their stock springs to lower the car? If so how much to cut off and how did you do it? And also how much did it lower the car? Not sure if I want to do it yet but these springs are just sitting around. I am not looking for excellent cornering or such just to lower the car.

cutting your springs is only going to make your ride go to ****. Just buy some C springs, they are pretty cheap.

If you have extra springs sitting around ... and a few hours to kill ... why not swap them in and find out! I have heard the same thing, and was thinking of cutting mine too ... but heard nothing but bad from everyone about how crappy the ride is when you cut them.

I heard you take one whole coil out, like cut it on the next loop down in the same place as it would be if it were the top. If time and effort are the biggest drawbacks, try it! Just be prepared to do the exact same spring removal all over again in a day or two.

yes, i dont remember how much i cut off, maybe 2 coils? it lowered the car about 2" the ride is fine...

this pic is like right after i did it, the rear has settled maybe 1/4" more since then

i considered cutting my springs to save some money but people talked me out of it. I saw a civic on the the freeway with cut springs and it rode like ****. It was bouncing all of the place so I HIGHLY recommend you dont do it. Plus it will be really bad on your stock shocks and the springs will eventually become to compressed after about 6 or 7 years (then you will have to replace them). its not worth it, just buy c springs for 150-200 $. My cobra was lowered 1 inch when i bought it and it looks sick. it will be money well spent.

btw cut springs are dangerous and if you taking a hard turn and you hit a bump your back end will come off the road for a sec and you will lose control of your car. but its your choice

also.......if you do decide to cut them the springs are 2 different sizes so if you cut 2 coils off all 4 springs your car will be un even. and you can also have problems with just one of the corner springs compressing and you will have one end lower then the other

Ford Racing C springs were only like $139 when I bought them. Great investment. If you cut the springs your asking for trouble but it's your car.

Oh and I have had experience with cut springs. My dad's old chevy pick up had them and the rear end used to bouce like crazy and it hydro plained every time it rained.

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering because I had heard from different people that it could be done. I still don't know if I'm gonna try or not. It won't take me long to do it. I work at a shop with a lift and have changed mustang springs before.

It sounds like it's one of those things where you just GOTTA try it once - hahaha!! And it seems like you're gonna try it no matter what anyone says. You've got the extra springs, and the shop ... just do it - see if the look is what ya want ... then buy some good springs and do it right! I got progressive rate BBK's and am VERY happy with them. NICE ride and about an inch and a half lower.
