Yes. When I recently replaced my stock filter for a K&N I noticed residue like water in the stock air box. So it can happen. Will the water make it pass the filter? Probably not.
Its always a possibility it can happen. It can be avoided greatly though by not getting a cold air kit that "dips" if you would the filter down into the fender well, where it can pick up water. I'de also avoid ram air kits due to this fact.
i had the same question till i got a cai that went inside the fender. I have driven in the rain and had no problems. So i would say you got nothin to worry about unless you are planin to go swimmin in your stang. lol
it will be ok as long as you never remove the wheel well liner. the filter is shielded by this. had a 95GT with a fenderwell cai and it was ok but to get more air i removed the liner. it would suck in water afterwards. just stick to the manufacturers instructions and you will be ok
I never had a water problem with the fenderwell type CAI. It's just a PITA to install and when you want to clean/recharge your filter. You have to take off the tire and loosen the fenderwell. It's a little difficult to get the filter tight on the end of the tube also. There's not much room to work with. I remember one post where someone's filter fell off while they were driving.

All you have to do is pull the fenderwell cover back a little and push it on. Removal and/or installation takes about 10 minutes, 5 if you have a helper.
