Just got finished putting my motor back together with a 89 5.0 block and now im trying to get it started. The starter engages, the crank turns over, and I know the cam timing is correct. My question is on a old car I know that for the firing order you put the harmonic balancer at top dead center and get the distributor rotor to point towards the number 1 cylinder then start the correct firing order from where the rotor is under the cap. On my mustang I tried doing that and I can't get it to start. Is it different on my car compared to a older car? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

you can't just point the balancer at 0 and call that TDC #1, it's a 4 stroke engine there are 2 rotations for one power cycle. Pull the plug out of #1, put your thumb or finger over the plug hole and have a friend bump the motor until you feel air pushing out, then rotate the balancer back (hopefully it's close) to 0 and now you're at TDC #1... (rotor should be pointing slightly after the post).

Check that the plug wires are connected to the dizzy cap and to the plugs in the correct order. Remember that the rotor turns counterclockwise and the firing order is 13726548. The cylinders are numbered 1-4 on the passenger side and 5-8 on the driver's side. You might find this picture helpful:
