I currently own a 5.0 with 80+K miles on it. I am still a senior in college but I am thinking about buying a new/newer car. There is an 04 Mach 1 with just over 1K miles on it that the dealer is asking $26K. Is that a reasonable price? The car has Bassani pipes, sub frame connectors, and a K&N intake. I havent looked too deep into the specs of the Mach 1 so I was hoping on top of letting me know about the price, if you could tell me a little about the Mach 1? I know it has a solid rear and pushes about 310hp. What would you pay for that car? BTW, I would keep the 5.0 as a project car. Thanks

well first off i enjoy my 04 mach very much. great car. i payed 25k for mine with just under 11k miles, about 4 months ago. car was stock when i baught it. with catback it dynoed 258hp 271ft lbs. now im sittin at 269 and 298, with gears, x pipe catback, drop in k&n, and pred. w/ auto trans. ran a 13.1 on street tires, so these cars are pretty quick. i see them into 12's real easily.

That sounds a lot like my Mach 1. It had 1,700 miles on it when I got it and the dealership was asking $26,995 for it. I got them down to around $23,000 for it. Ernad will tell you that is too much for a Mach 1. I remember he got his Comp. Orange slightly before I did and claims to have paid $21,000 for it. I say tell the dealership you can only pay so much a month and stick to it. That is how I got them down. If I were you though, I would keep that 5.0 and not trade it in. You'll be kicking yourself later if you do. It is worth more than whatever measly amount they will offer you for it.

Hmmm, how the hell did you know that I was going to post in this thread? Damn!

Anyway, to the original poster.....Yes, that is too much. First, it's a Mustang, a 2004 Mustang. There were thousands made and thousands are for sale. I imagine that the car itself is AT LEAST a year and a half old. Even when the last Machs were being sold, Ford offered a few incentives on them. I've heard of people getting new Machs (back then) in the mid-20s. So as you see, $26k would be a bit too much for a new Mach today, especially a used one, no matter how many miles are on it. Its warranty won't live for long either, though the exact time of this depends on when it was sold first. A new 2006 GT would run you the same price and you'd have a new car (not that you should buy one, they kind of have a fat ass).

The dealer may argue this "Oh, but it's a special Mustang. Only made in 03 and 04. Not many of them. Got a better engine, suspension, wheels...." Forget that. There were thousands of Machs made too, economicaly speaking, they're nothing special.

So, what would I pay? If the car was mint, I'd be willing to put up to 20 grand for it (cash). However, I would not finance that car for more then 18 grand.

A quick Mach description:

Machs were only produced in 2003/04 (in the recent times). They were all coupes and were available in autos or 5 speeds. The manual versions got a forged crank and higher speed limit - limit. Machs have a different suspensions than GTs through different springs and shocks/struts, thus they are a bit lower. They came with Mach wheels, a solid rear with 3.55's. The engine is a 4.6 DOHC with 305hp and 315tq. And not to forget, the shaker hood and the shaker. Also side graphics and a black rear wing and a chin spoiler.

Here is a great Mach site http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/ On there you can even get an OASIS report (tells you a lot more about the car) in case you go for this one or any other Stang.

I'm not done yet .....Don't get stuck on one car and think that you won't find anything better and pay more then you should. There's tons of late model stangs in good shape and price that will give you that newer car thing that you're looking for. Good luck.

paid $19.5 for my 03 with 25k miles, even the 04s on the lot were in the $21-$22 range. Believe it or not I actually found it at a tiny dealership using cars.dot then had a dealer that I wanted to finance through buy it from them so I could finance through them.

Funhog, that there is is a very important part! I passed up several Mach 1s before I got mine. Make sure it is really what you want and at the price you want. There will always be another car out there. Be prepared to walk out of the dealership. I walked out on one sale because I thought they were trying to rape me on my trade in (I got $5,000 more for it when I traded it than they wanted to give me).

Just bought an 03 Azure blue with 3,600 miles for 21,900 and was ashamed at myself at how little I haggled with them. I just wanted it and it was showroom cond. with even the plastic still on the carpet. Figured this was my last chance to get a relatively rare car while it was still both new and reasonably priced.

Mach's don't sit on a car lot very long. I think getting it for 25K on a 1,000 mile Mach is a good price. Who cares about the warranty. My Mach is my third Mustang and the only thing I had replaced under warranty was on my '93 GT for replacement trunk weatherstripping. The only thing you need to worry about is the head tick which I think mainly concerned '03 Mach's and the synchronizers in the shifter that concerned '03 and early '04 Mach's. They are great cars. If you keep it stock, it hauls azz, and if you modify it, it hauls even more azz. The new '07 Shelby coming out does'nt even hold my interest. The Mach rules.

Thanks a lot to everyone that replied. Lots of help. If I can get them down to like 21 then I would do it. And I am definetely going to keep the 5.0. I figure all I would do to the Mach is gears and a shaker extender. What gears are all of yous putting in it-3.73's? But I do need to realize that there are more cars out there and not to get too caught up on this one car. I'll let all of yous know how it goes.

If you can get them do drop their price by 5K, then your a regular Monty Hall. But hey, just see what you can haggle it down to. If your gonna get gears, better just go with 4.10's. Putting in 3.73's would be a waste when the Mach already has 3.55's standard. Good luck.

I have a '03 that just went off the factory warranty and and has only needed the two back shocks and the plastic cowl under the windshield replaced under warranty, along with a fix for the passenger seat rub against the door. No general mechanical or electrical problems, no left head tick, and no transmission issues.

Funhog,
I'd check with your insurance company on how much that 'R' code ride will thin out your wallet. Plus, this is a 'Premium' fuel only car. When the gas prices get high, your wallet will get lighter.
On a good note thou, I get 19 & 27 MPG, if I keep the revs down while driving. My truck gets far less MPG.

It is a fine ride thou!

Damn, this thread turned to

Hey, btw, I got great pics of my car being driven. I can sell you those too. I'll only charge you $.10 per 10mph of the speed that it was traveling at.

My Mach is the best car I've ever bought, I don't regret the purchase one bit. But, the 'R' code did boost my insurance premium. I gave $24,750 for mine new in 2004 (10 miles on the ODO). The fact that the one you are looking at already has miles and mods on it, I'd be leary. It definately justifies a serious compromise on part of the dealership on their asking price. I'm thinking an offer of $16K is fair. If you can drive it off the lot for one dollar under $20K, you'll be OK.

Check Edmunds.com for the trade-in value, you can get a bit of an idea what the dealership gave for it. Also remember that they probably got it for quite a bit less than that and juiced the deal on the other end against the buyer.

Morale of my post: when the salesman tries to give you a guilt trip over how low your "ridiculous" offer is, just hand him your cell phone # and tell him to call you if that offer will work after he "talks to his sales manager". Then, walk out the friggin' door. Whatever you do, DO NOT drive that ride until you have a firm price, you'll lose all sense at that point

To help put it in further perspective, about 6 weeks ago I was considering trading mine in on an 04 Cobra or Lightning. My Mach is an 03. It had 7,000 miles on it. I'm 58 so they know it is not driven hard. Plus, it is immaculate.
What did they offer me? $17,000. I said K.M.A.

It is a Mach until you trade it in. Then its just a GT to them when they pull out their blue/black book. It is a neat car. Except for the Cobra or a Lightning, I'd have a real hard time talking myself into trading the Mach for anything else.

No way they're gonna drop their price 10 grand. Probably the lowest they will go is about 23k if they are at 26k now. A Mach with 1000 miles on it is worth a little more than one with 10000 or 20000 miles too. No doubt a great car for the money though.
