Considering buying...thoughts?

Hello everyone, I'm considering purchasing an 89 5.0 and thought I'd see what the you experts think. Here is a link to the car. 89 mustang 5.0

It has the AOD transmission, but 4th gear is out. He said that it would be a few hundred dollars to have fixed . He said there is an oil leak, which he thinks is due to the motor high revving when it would try and shift into the non existent 4th gear. I'm waiting to hear back on where it is leaking from. Otherwise he said everything runs fine according to him. He told me that he's been trying to get the tranny to go out completely for the last few years, but it hasn't. He has a C6 tranny and a 351 that he was going to put in and build up. If I understood correctly those come with the car. I could possibly use those to build up later or maybe just sell for extra cash. The only other thing he mentioned is the hood didn't completely latch when he bought it and he flew up on him putting a small dent on the top and denting the cowl.


I figured if I bought it I might as well do a full rebuild of the AOD and considered the Lentech Street Terminator VB and a TCI rebuild kit from Summit Racing (TCI Auto 438900 - TCI Pro Super Transmission Overhaul Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com). I would need to replace the torque converter, but I'm not quite sure what to go with right now. Right now I just want something to daily drive and be reliable, but at the same time figured if it needs to be done I might was well do it to handle whatever mods I do later on.

I'd offer cash on the car, so I could possibly get it a little less. Overall I'm not looking to spend any more that 4K or so total.

Personally, I think it's about $1000 overpriced. For four grand you could get yourself a nice car instead of spending a bunch of time and money trying to make that POS into something good.

that is a 500 dollar parts car at best. pass on that. He will make more money sending it to the crusher. I hate to send a fox to the yard, but that is going to need 6k minimum to make it a decent and reliable car.

I saw that one too, I guess the only downside is it's about 5-5.5hrs away from me. I hate to drive that far and it not be quite as advertised. Driving that far, I definitely need the car to be road ready and trust worthy. I figure by building one up I don't have to worry as much about those parts going out and having to spend more money that I don't have. I definitely agree though, the car doesn't look like much in those pics and I haven't actually went to look at it yet to see.

That's what I've been kinda worried about too. I don't want to put too much into it all at once.

the fox in my sig was in running condition when I bought it but was very rough. I bought it for under a grand. To date I have 7k invested and I havent even touched paint and body and there is still a lot left to do on other areas of the car. I wish I had gone with a clean 4-5k dollar car. I am honestly tired of wrenching on it and its far from the point where I would consider myself the "proud owner."

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean.

I definitely need the second car, so maybe I should wait to get a "toy"...lol It's just hard for me to do, I've always been into modifying and it's a hard thing to break...haha I hate the decisions of buying a car, more so my wife usually hates the cars I look at because she knows I'll always be tinkering with them. It's not one of my favorable hobbies for her...lol

If you need a DD I would suggest a sn95 or a 4th Gen fbody. Both cars have a huge market and are much better platforms.

I paid $4000 for the one in my sig a couple of days ago. I say hold out, and spend a little more for a clean car. They are out there you just have to wait

Man I thought the EXACT same thing while reading his post, $600 tops for that car.

Sitting in that junkyard field with moisture pouring out of the ground, i bet the undercarriage is rusted out and as far as the aod trans only needing a few hundred dollars to fix is laughable, those transmissions are money pits and never work right.

Pass on that piece of scrap/ parts donor. I know where a 80k original mile 89 Convert Black on Black is for 2500

Keep looking and keep saving up. As stated above you'd be much happier with a cleaner stock fox for 3-4K. God knows whats been done to that thing.

I went the beater route on my first fox. Shortly after I bought I found it needed the frame straightened, and lots of other hidden BS. I don't recommend it.

I took everyones advice and steered clear of it. I decided to pick up a '97 2 door Yukon GT with a whipple supercharger instead. I'll revisit my thoughts of a mustang later on when I have the money to start building something up. Thanks for everyones advice, I'm sure I'll still lurk around to get a little more knowledgeful on the mustang.

Picks of Yukon! That is my favorite body style. I had a black 93 K5 Blazer. I miss that truck.
