WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAA hold up this was all said in light jest. We are not trying to make anyone feel stupid.

I apologize if I made anyone feel bad. It was an interesting story and I appreciated the opportunity to laugh in jest as it has been a terrible week, AND IT'S ONLY TUESDAY... waaaaaaaaa.....

~P~ I agree with you 100% on the gas issue and direct your attention to this thread if you had missed it a week or two ago.

And yeah I know about the hurricans but that has only sent us up to $3 a gallon. it hasn't been the factor that sent us up to $2.50 to begin with. its called the war in the middle east. its called George Bush and Cheney making money off it and don't wanna give it up.

Ok Pliskin, listen up. You WANT Bush over there. IF his agenda is the oil then thats great for us. Where is your proof that he is pocketing money from this?Cheaper gas, oil, plastics every oil based product will be cheaper if we were to secure more oil. Economy will grow. You can keep driving a Mustang that gets 300hp rather than a Mustang that gets 140hp. Also, our *emergency* oil supply will only sustain this country for a couple of years. This is being saved for the inevitable: Completely dried up oil deposits which is projected to occur during our lifetime. Please get all the fact before making a decision.

Oh, please refrain from saying SUV drivers cause expensive gas. SUVs are but a speck in the universe when you think of things such as racing, military requirements (the carrier I'm stationed on takes on a few MILLION gallons of desiel at a time), aircraft, and other uses.

There are multiple issues. The strategic petroleum reserve doesn't have enough oil to put any kind of dent in the worldwide demand for oil. Releasing oil from the SPR is a political move, and will do nothing to reduce the price of a barrel of oil. The price of oil is mainly being driven up by speculators and traders at this point, not by lack of supply.

The second issue is refining capacity. We can bring all the crude oil we want into this country, but we can't refine it any faster than is currently being done. And now we've lost some refining capacity in New Orleans, which will only tighten supplies further.

Get used to $3/gallon gasoline, it will be with us for a while...

There are millions of 12-15 MPG SUV's on the road today. They most certainly have an impact on the demand for gasoline in this country. Especially when the vast majority of SUV drivers could get by just as well with a minivan that gets 25 MPG. But a minivan isn't as cool as an SUV.

Some people are frigging idiots.

Why use our oil when we can use somebody else's? When there oil is all gone, and the US is the only one with any oil left, then who will be the biotch? And for all the people out to get W, lay off. George W is twice the man yall could ever be.

Hopefully they'll put some bigger injectors in my Stang so my Saleen supercharger doesn't run too lean at high RPM's.

I'm going to start a chain letter about how good of gas mileage I'm getting, with directions to my house.

That has to be the single most comical post I have ever read. Har har har. PolkThug's was better. jk

I never mentioned SUVs. Not planning to.

I was for Bush in the election and didn't attack what kind of man he is. I'm sure if I were in his situation I'd want all the money in the world too. He sure as hell isn't the best President ever and we COULD be in a better situation as a whole. But this started out as a semi-amusing little story and we should leave it and let it end it that way. Plus arguements on one's political views however bias or ignorant they may be will not be to anyone's benefit.

You still assume he gets a lot of money because of high gas prices and I would like to hear why you think something so... well stupid. He is wealthy enough as it is so there is no reason for him to want us to pay more for gas. Not too mention if we are spending more on gas we are spending less on everything else so it would only hurt our economy further. I am just bewildered by people who blame bush for everything with a bunch of baseless accusations.

Well, we could use the national oil reserve to do that, but Clinton approved the sale of a big chunk of it to the Al Gore's family Oil company, Occidental. Thanks big guy! But really this current oil price is still much lower in real dollars (adjusted for inflation) than it was in the 70's and early 80's. And it's still dirt cheap compared to gas in europe.

I would think with all the devastation and problems right now, we can all put aside our differences to look at the element of human loss and tragedy at the moment. This is going to get far worse before it gets any better and if this is the best example of how well we can pull together in time of crisis. I am scared.

Why don't we all take a time out and consider the individuals whose lives have been lost and uprooted in a devastating fashion and be grateful for clean drinking water, running plumbing, food and safety and stop the political hash slinging and name calling.

I think the viability of this thread is done. Next topic please.

Thank you all.

What about the story out of Germany that they believe America is responsible for the hurricane because of our unwillingness to do more to reduce global warming?

I guess that would mean that it's our government's fault, which means it's W's fault, which means he is so powerful he can control the weather, which would mean he is god. As long as we're going do the conspiracy thing any theory can work, right?

As someone already said, it's an urban legend. But I do believe cars are capable of that kind of mileage. But if we didn't have to buy gas so often, no one would own us would they?

Some of you might want to get a good read on something like this: (http://money.howstuffworks.com/gas-price.htm). Specifically the person that noted our storage in Texas would last a couple of years (" Also, our *emergency* oil supply will only sustain this country for a couple of years." by 05MGT). In fact as of 2004, the storage of oil there would only last us 60 days at the level we consume oil if all imported oil was cutoff completely....

Also amazingly to know is that in the world, the US is the SECOND largest producer of oil yet we consume so much we also import the MOST... Mind blowing really...

I particularly like the insight towards the end to what will happen when all the oil is gone. How much will oil cost when we run out? I completely agree, we will truely never really run out of oil. It will just get so damn expensive to buy oil that we will have already moved everything over to other power means. Oil will run out, no big secret, but we have other ways to power cars and soon those ways will be guiding us to better cars, very soon I hope...

And don't write off a 300hp car because gas is gone. This mentality is one of the reasons why we dont have non-oil based cars as it is. Other forms of fuel in developement and existence are quite potent.

Shh now.

Anyway, my dad clearified it for me. He said it was a story that happened 70's or so. Saying that cars had to meet the EPA standards of MPG and emissions. We have to ability to raise milage from 17mpg from back then to 40s now. Its just the point that we may have the technology to make cars with amazing milage but we have too much to lose in terms of money and such. Not that big a deal just something to think about. Thats all.

At least stanmckinney puts in some polite input and sees where I'm coming from.

Oh and by the way. I just heard on the radio we ARE tapping into our national strategic oil reserve. Thanks.

Somebody touched on it here, if this was true, automotive companies would be all over this like stink on ****. A car that got double the gas mileage, it would be a huge competitive edge. We've seen how the imports have killed the car industry and are now setting their sights on the truck market. If there was an easy way, somebody would have done it rather than spending the cash today researching into hybrids, fuel cells and the like...

Again, I don't understand how you can even think such things especially all the evidence that has been provided to prove otherwise. Why would any car company purposely make gas mileage lower when it is a huge factor right now in selling cars? If they did have some sort of agreement with oil companies where they got paid to make cars "less fuel efficient" cars, why would they be looking into alternative energy sources and improving gas mileage over time? Just something to think about.
