converter vs street radials

Looking for some input from the guys running aftermarket converters. I'm looking at something in the 2000-2400 range for my daily and I'm wondering if traction will be a big issue. The car is a commuter first so I don't want to go overboard but it needs some help getting off the line if the need arises. ;) Anyway, just wondering in general, what has traction been like since adding a stall?

Also, what is the factory stall rated at?
 
factory stall is around 15-1600. I put a 2800 in mine. Sometimes it feels too loose for the street, going uphill especially, but I also have 4.10's. Traction definitely became an issue after the install, but nothing a set of sticky tires can't handle :D
Most guys ill tell you 2000-2400 is too low to make a big difference, and mine is a daily driver, too, 50-60 miles of city driving a day :)
I would go 2800 :nice:
 
my car is weird ..... i had a converter in even with the stock 3.08 gears and i was cutting 1.80 60fts all day long with baby street tires lol.

even now with 4.10 and heads and everything going mid 12's i dont really have traction problems unless from a dead stop on the street .
 
What is the deal with going uphill?

Thanks for the input guys. By the looks of it, 2800 is too much. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like it'll turn the car into a real screamer off the line but that's not what I want. I'm just looking to liven things up a bit. It seems that 2400 could be a decent compromise. The car will see very little track time so max ets aren't a concern.
 
I put a 24-2800 rpm stall converter in my 82 before adding drag radials, and went from marginal traction to blowing the tires away through 2nd gear in the C4.

I added BFG Drag Radials, and it took a half second off the eigth mile. Some of the best stuff on the car!
 
My last car had a 3000+ 10" converter and worked good and ran relatively cool. The operating temp is the only problem that a converter causes. It's the excess heat that ruins the tranny. All you need to do is add an aftermarket high efficiency transcooler...they make cooler set ups with fans that work great.
 
I have a 2800 precision Industries.I have a stock cam and it was a hair to big..I put in 1.7 roller rockers and it cured the problem..Dont go smaller then 2400!!! Stock is 1800,,,,it depends on the brand also,,guys with Edge converters swear by the 3000 stall even with the stock cam :shrug: Yes it will give you traction problems.But you can fool around with different tires and some suspension mods to cure that,,you "need" the conv..,,besides,it makes everyday driving a "blast"!

Willy, you pretty much convinced me earlier on but I still want be sure I make the right choice. I got in touch with TCI and they recommended 2600 (Street Figher) so apparently I won't be going below 2400. That stall goes for $550...how much does the PI in that range run?
 
I have two TCI converters, both for my C4's, and highly recommend them. One is an 11 in Streetfighter and the other is a 10 in version. Both run fine on the street, but I do have coolers on them.

If you have the AOD, and keep the lockup, the high stall speed is not a real problem.

Yeah get the lock up,it will run cooler! PI "stallion" converter is 700 beans!! But if you get one, a tranny cooler is a "MUST"!!! Normally I'd advise against buying ANYTHING from B&M,,but they make a really good tranny cooler.I think its under a 100 beans! When you getting it?
