Convertible back belt moulding

The back belt molding on my 'vert is looking really faded these days and I would like to remove all three pieces so that I can repaint them. I do not want to try to refinish them while they are on the car! Me, sandpaper and paint don't mix! Has anyone tried this? If yes, what paint did you use? How did you get the molding off?

I know if you pop the trunk you can get top the screw that are for the middle piece, I think the rest are on the inside You might have to put the top down to get to them. I would say prime sand then paint black just don't use the cheap paint cans.
