Before shelling out the $200+, make sure your motor has plenty of hydraulic fluid. If you can hear it running, most likely it doesn't need to be replaced - it's probably just low on fluid. If it is low on fluid, check the lift cylinders for leaks, but it's possible to just be low on fluid.

How to fill:
1. lower the top (by hand if necessary).
2. Either pull the rubber plug at the end of the canister on the top motor (be careful, if it's the original plug it's probably brittle, mine broke in half into the canister, still worked fine though) OR turn the pump on it's side and which ever hose is sticking up, disconnect it.
3. Fill the canister through the hole you just opened (edit: don't fill to the brim, make sure you have it 3/4 full)
4. Replace plug or hose.
5. Test top again.

(more edit: the top motor is located behind the back seat - get to it through the trunk)

Good luck.

If you do have to change out the motor just a little tidbit that might be to your advantage. Mustangs have had the same top motor in them from 1965 -1993. When my motor went bad I pulled it out and replaced it with the spare I keep for my 65. Same harness and all.
