i got home today and smelt the coolant overheating smell so i opened the hood. the coolant overflow was shooting a stream of coolant out of the little hole that is near the top facing the front of the car. i did the inake swap this past weedend if that might have anything to do with it. any suggestions as to what i can do or what it might be.

your overheating problem can be a number of things, from the head gaskts being blown, to the water pump being the wrong rotation, to the radiator being clogged. It could also be that you fan isnt spinning right if ou have a stock fan or your electric fan isnt big enough, but your radiator cap could also be the cause of it.

So the overflow is full and bleeding off excess fluid?
If you overfilled the system, as the coolant expanded, it needed a place to go, and it went out the top of the reservoir. That would be normal on an overfilled system. Now unless the motors gets even hotter, it should not do this again.

Good luck.

yes

my low coolant light came on the other day. the temp was fine so i checked and the overflow was empty. i filled it and the light went off. then yesturday it happened again so i did the same thing and it was fine. i draind the coolant before i read this post but when i fill it back up, how much do i put in. do i fill the radiator to the top and then what do i do with the overflow. hopefully thats all my problem is, just too much in there. also what about that smell. thanks

When you dumped hot coolant out the overflow, it hit all the hot stuff under the hood and created a sweet smell.

The overflow has a cold and hot water level mark on it, doesnt it (or is that on the SN95 only?).

Good luck.

Did you burp the system after your intake swap? You might have an air bubble in the cooling system which could cause overheating.

The FOX had the levels marked on the coolant overflow as well. If you filled the overflow completely full then it will purge itself when it gets hot the first time..

Thanks James for the clarification. I cant keep stuff straight anymore.

I can never see down the stupid bottles to see where the level is anyhow. Sometimes, from below the car with a flashlight, I can see where the level is. Reservoirs are clean too.

Good luck.

i think i burped it. all you do is squeeze on the upper radiator hose with the cap for the radiator open right? the car did not overheat. that was not the problem. the temp was fine. i smelt that smell so i went to pop the hood and noticed it overflowing. when i did the intake swap, i would say i got half the coolant in the bucket if that, when i drained it. the rest went all over me and the floor. i must have just put too much back in. i filled the radiator and the overflow. thanks everyone

throttle body

i put the stock tb back on the car and it runs so much better. no more hanging idle and the car is more comfertable to drive. i think it is safe to say the 70 is to big for what i have now. do you think i should stick with the stock tb until i get either heads or a poweradder. would it be worth it to go for the 65 with the stock heads. i will probally just sell the bbk and get some gears. what do you guys think?

just to make sure you properly burped the system jack up the driverside close to radiator. if your driveway has a slope face car at highest point and jack up the driverside.
from cool let it heat up with cap off. when thermostat opens your upper hose will be hot and add fluid. rev engine to 2000-3000 rpm make sure your level in radiator drops 4-5 inches at operating temp. if lower keep adding
this is full. replace the $3 radiator cap just for assurance and fill resevoir to mid between hot and cold
