i got JR's overflow tank today, installed it, filled the radiator till the car was warm, put the cap on....filled the resivoir till it was between the hot and cold fill, took it for a drive and got about 1/2 mile down the road and the temp gauge was way up to the L in normal...usually my car runs at the N...so i pulled it over and there was steam coming out of under the hood.... so i looked in the over fill tank and it was completely full/overflowing....coolant all under the hood..... and the radiator was down about 6-8" or so....

my thoughts...
-broken/ backwards/ clogged T-stat..... wouldnt that build up too much pressure in the radiator if it was trying to push the coolant one way but it wasnt letting it through? i dont know

what do you think?

When you popped the radiator cap, did the coolant inside smell like exhaust? When my V6's head gaskets went, I had exhaust in the coolant, and the temp would just spike like that.

I know from the other threads you have cometic gaskets, but the extra air in the radiator's gotta come from somewhere. After reading 1105's turbo problems, I'd be willing to bet you're leaking exhaust from a cylinder into a water passage. Due to the leak, the supercharger would then pressurize the coolant system. This would explain why the mechanics couldn't flush the system - the pressure was forcing all the water out.

It's a guess, but it fits the symptoms you're experiencing. I'd try a leakdown test in each cylinder, before you try pulling the heads.

Heres a list of things id look into:
-Radiator cap- might not be pressurizing the system
-Feel the radiator itself- Is on side cool after running it a little?
-Water pump- Take tension off the belt and pull up and down on the pulley. There should be ZERO play
-Thermostat- Might not be opening, could be backwards
-Headgaskets

i just got a new radiator cap 2 days ago, i thought that was the problem....

some thing i forgot to add....the tube coming back from the lower intake to the radiator doesnt seem to have presssure on it....but the radiator itself has pressure in it becuase i can hear it when i take the cap off....

I've been fighting with my chit post blower install also. First, i got a new gage to verify, and sure enough, hot it was getting. Just got a new cap, double checked t-installation, new ECT, and bled the poop out of it. So far so good. I had bled it before, but just yesterday did it again and got some nasty bubbles coming up, but no o-heating today. Seems to have worked. Don't know if you looked yet, but there is a bunch of similar stuff in the olsdthreads, try a search, may have some good info for you. good luck man

My opinion of the most likely cause is the Tstat not working correctly. Almost wanna hope that's it, since it is such an easy/cheap fix.

You need to burp the coolant system. Start your car up with the radiator cap off and fill it to the top. Let it run up to temp and let the thermostat open and the fan will kick on when it does. The coolant will start to overflow out of top and try and fill it when the fan stops all the way to the top. Squeeze your upper radiator hose a few times to get the air out and then fill it up again when the fan kicks on. Wait until the fan stops again and top it off then cap it. Fill the over flow and you should be straight.
Did you get a cap for the overflow?

Same issue here

My 94 cobra with an s trim also has the same problem. I've replaced all my cooling components thinking it was that. Fluydine rad, Flow kooker water pump, All hoses, Mr gasket high flow stat, 3 sets of headgaskets, resurfaced and pressure tested heads, and still the same problem. Tommorow we are hopefully going to do a leak down test, and compression test. I've heard it could be a cracked or warped block, bad head, or intake I am hoping it is a head or intake only but hopefully we can find the problem. My car idles and runs fine no smoke or missing. but it looses water and under hard acceleration it overflows the coolant thru resevoire and raditator. I am completely puzzled so I will follow this thread closely so hopefully we can find the problem, and If I figure out my problem I will post up.

yeeehawww....well i got a new t-stat and havent put it in yet, but i will tomorrow....
JR i did get a cap for the over flow tank and coolant was still coming out of the top...ill try your burping of the cooling system when i put the t-stat in..

hopefully this fixes the prob....
ECT?? what is that and how do i bleed it??

for chits and grins....remove the ECT sensor in the lower intake...Is there coolant there??? or even get a small funnel and fill it from there....I had a mother of a time burping mine....
if its low on coolant you might as well pop the themo and see whats up....does it have a bleed hole and is the hole at 12:00???

hopefully its just a burping issue??? that would be nice...

nevermind...i got it in the right way and it seemed to help...i drove it for about 5-10 miles got into it a little bit the temp gauge never left the N on normal.... and got home looked under the hood....i didnt have coolant splashed all over, no steam coming out of the engine bay and finally i had lots of pressure on the coolant tube between my t-stat and the Radiator!
i really hope this fixed it....

Never had a t-stat fail on me like that. I'm glad I was wrong, and that it was such an easy fix. :nice:

lol.....nevermind....it did it again lastnight....
it drove soooooo good all day....i drove it about 60 miles yesterday in the sun and stuff....no problems till i was on the way home, then it started doing it again....temp gauge going crazy, steam coming out all over, coolant coming out of the over-flow tank...i hate my car....for sale....$5

well, lastnight i decided to park the car for the summer, and do a ground up (kinda) restoration....including

engine will be rebuilt....new rings and bearings and all that fun stuff....
clean/paint the engine, including polishing some parts.
molded engine bay along with hidden wires
paint engine bay
maybe repaint car (change color???)
Full suspension...springs struts, cc plates, control arms ect.
tremec transmission
aluminum drive shaft
diffrent rims...possibly FR500's (anthercerite (sp?) but im waiting till they come out with 10.5's)
DR's
what else should i do???? i dont care about money..
