1 month ago I installed a set of Contour fans and a dcc controller.Since then when I first drive my car in the morning the temp gauge will shoot up past 230 then come back down like the t-stat is sticking closed,(180 t-Stat).I changed out the thermostat 2 weekends ago and it was working fine until this morning.Did the same thing again. The system is sealed with no leaks and there is no air in the system so not sure what is causing this. This never happened with the clutch fan.

fan turn on temperature

What is your fan turn on temperature set at. A 180 degree thermostat won't fully open until 188 degrees, i have tested them in boiling water. Then you want to set the fan to turn on at 10 degrees above 188 degrees so your not fighting the opening and closing of the thermostat, try 198 degrees fan turn on at the controller and see how it works. When the fan kicks on it will cool down 8-10 degrees until it stabilizes at 198. I have my fan set this way and the temp gauge will stay at 198 degrees no matter how hot it is outside in traffic. I also have a mechanical water gauge, i don't trust electrical gauges.

The fan controller is wired up per the instructions and work fine after the first start up of the day. When the temperature goes up its not a slow movement like the car is overheating with the fans on,just a very rapid temp rise. When I shut the car off and turn it back on the temp returns to 180 almost instantly.I had a Mark8 fan installed with my factory overflow tank and everything was fine.I wanted more room so switched to these fans with the generic advance auto parts overflow tank and now having this issue.

See if the upper radiator hose is hot when your temp gauge hits 190-200 degrees, if not you may have put the thermostat in backwards.

After the thermostat change it ran fine for a little over a week.I imagine a backwards t-stat would show as a problem right from the get go.

I would take the thermostat out and put it in a small pot of water and heat it up and check it with a meat thermometer. I have seen stranger coincidences with my car, maybe the new thermostat is defective.

Try the mr. gaskets 180 thermostat, i like them alot better than the stant style.
Should be available at pepboys or autozone.

The sudden rise suggests the problem has nothing to do with the fan.
It almost has to be the thermostat or air pockets.

Make sure you put the thermostat in the housing first, it has to sit in the recessed area, so clean that out too, then put the gasket over the thermostat. I use high tack on the housing side of the gasket to hold the thermostat in the housing while bolting to intake. The intake side of gasket i put a light coating of anti seize compound so later down the road the housing will come off easy and you can reuse the gasket. Also pointed end of thermostat towards radiator and copper pellet end toward intake.
