Well, I got pulled over today for no front plate and "the sound" as I went by.
First question out of his mouth "what have you done to this car for racing"? I started to squirm and try to explain that it wasn't a "race car". He proceeds to point out the guages, the rollbar, the pedals. Then he say's "What, do you think I'm stupid"? (now I don't like where this is going).
He say's "get out and open the hood" So, I do. He looks under the hood and Say's "are you going to stand there and try to tell me this IS NOT a race car"? Now I hear myself saying "well, I have raced it but it's not a race car".
He starts questioning every thing under the hood, looking for C.A.R.B. numbers, fortunately I do have some that I can point out to him. It gets almost funny when he points to my catch can and say's "what about this, got numbers for this"? I explain what it does and then dive into my whole shpeel about how bad street racing is and how I only race at the track (in my car that is not a race car) and then he goes into this thing about ricers and NAWZ and how it's legal in imports but not domestics  and then he tells me he is documenting this encounter so that if anything goes down with a car fitting my discription he'll know where to look.
What a trip.
Bottom line, I get a fix-it ticket for the plate and I'm on my way feeling like I just robbed a bank and talked my way out of it.
I'm putting that damned front plate back on tonight. I don't need to have that conversation again.
Just sharing.

Sounds like you got off easy :p I got pulled over for excessive noise the other night :nonono: I had to explain that I still had a stock mid pipe and it was just a catback exhaust and it was legal.

Yeah, this guy even asked about CAT's but I changed the subject and totaly skirted that issue. I wish I would have had a recorder, Beau you would of been cracking up at my song and dance.
And the way I was driving at 30mph in 4th when he got behind me, and then the way I pulled out, going through the gears without ever going over 1100 rpm.

I am a bit worried. I am practicing my speech in my head. No officer I have a buddy who talked me into welding on gutted flowmasters....

I know pretty F'n thin, but it is pretty friggin loud now :D
I do think you'll be ok, as long as you don't get caught for something else first. Then you should just play it up to ignorance about the smog laws if you can.

I just got my Washington plates on my San Diego car, got pulled over yesterday and the cop was itching to say something about my engine when I popped the hood for him (it's not even close to street legal in CA). Fortunately WA doesn't have smog tests, so he couldn't say di@k, just gave me a ticket for speeding. Win some, lose some.

Bill

Was the cop a city cop or C.H.P. ? Nice job dancing your way out of that one, sounds like the cop was a real d@#$%@#. I have another question was he a young or older cop ? now I better be careful because my car is pretty loud too :bang: See you all tonight at the Q

Fred :flag:

Was that a Carlsbad cop? You'd hate to think that you might run into this guy every other day or so. Man, I'm sure your pulse must have been racing. The dialogue sounds like a bad dream. Good thing he didn't check for cats. Nice job getting off with the fix-it ticket for the front plate. Maybe you should take off those shiny new wheels and fat tires......:)

Oh and Fred, don't you need to update your signature??? Do I have to be the only one!!

Hey just a little tip. I got pulled over by some rookie in Pasadena for loud exhaust. Went to CHP and told them that I had gotten a fix it ticket for loud exhaust and that I did not trust local PD's judgment as to what constitutes loud exhaust. The officer came outside and had me start the engine and she asked me to rev it up...of course I never got past 2200 rpms...she tells me to turn off the engine after 4 seconds and signs it off.

Point is, if local PD gives you a "loud" exhaust ticket, take it to Sheriffs or CHP...they have real crime to worry about and could really care less about exhaust unless you're running open pipes.

It was a Carlsbad cop, maybe in his early 40's
He was actually thretening to send me to the B.A.R. where he said "they'll go through your car with a fine toothed comb and you will not get it back on the street untill everything has been fixed to their satisfaction" (he said with a crazed look in his eye and spit flying from his mouth).
Sometimes you have to pick between being a smart A$$ (my usual route) or a Kiss A$$. I puckered up real good for this :chair: knuckle head.

Just an update on this stupid thred.
I saw another motorcycle cop yesterday morning so I pulled over and asked if he could sign off my ticket.
He was a real nice guy. He said that "the other guy" had just returnned from a 3 day class all about street racing and that him and a few others were "on a mission".
He said he's seen me around for years and that he would have never pulled me over for no plate.
People are people, some lame, some not.
