My cousin is seriously considering an engine rebuild and major amount of mods.

The extent is as follows.
lift motor, Disassemble, Block bore 40 over, Work on cracked head, new valves, new flat top pistons, energizer cam, motor mounts, all new hoses and belts. install flowmaster mufflers.

He already bought new intake and carb and petronix elctronic egnition upraged- $500.

The mechanic will take this and install them as well as all of the above. Paint the block and heads. and drop the engine back into the car and get it running.

How much $, do you think, will this run in total?

I'm not sure what motor you're referring to, but 40 over is marginal. I have heard some 289s have overheatng problems when taken that far. Considering the motor already has a cracked head, maybe you ought to get a a different motor to start with. Unless it's some rare motor. just MHO.

If you want it done right, and you're going to re-use your crank, rods and heads, manifolds, the cost should be $4000.00+ If you're going roller cam or new heads, or new crank, etc. just add the cost of those parts.

I've had a few motors rebuit (machine block, re-use rods and crank, hyperetectic pistons, intall larger ss valves, new oil pump, new fuel pump, new flat tapat cam setup, polish heads, port match manifolds, roller rockers, new timing chain, reassemble, paint, tune re-install). All came to around $4000.00. Anything else I had done was above and beyond that basic amount.

Wow, sounds expensive. I think doing it yourself is the way to go. Just be careful and do lots of research.

Did Ford make a 350? A friend recently priased the Chevy 350 because they are so easy to work on and parts are so much cheaper. I even looked up rebuild costs and they do seem to be significantly less expensive for basic rebuild parts.

Hey my cousin posted for me using my screen name.

Any way, the procedure is as above.
Well the mechanic is doing all the work and i am buying many of the smaller parts. I really trust this mechanic. He works for San Antonio Police Department and has built several engines Fords and chevies. He built a 350 for a camaro he had and ran 11's with it. Any way he got the internals and mufflers for me.

Any way he is charging me $1500 for all the big stuff. (the actual rebuild). Cam, piston heads, etc. (pretty much upgrading all of my internals).

I bought a power plus intake and a holley 600. as well as the uprgades to electonic iginition. so far $500. I have to get other stuff like motor mount, plugs, wires, oil, filters, and belts.

I estimate that I will end up somewhere around $2200.

Not too long now before we actually get it running he has finished with the block and heads. Now all he has to do is put every thing together and drop it in.

I cant wait too see how this all ends up. Its going to be so much better than my dead stock motor. The mechanic says even he cat wai to see how it runs and feels very good about how it will turn out.

Later mods include: shift kit, gears and headers.

Sorry for the long post, i am just so excited.
