Couple of questions, clutch, headers

Hi, I have a few problems that need to addressed. My car is an 01 early model GT with 52,000 miles and stock clutch. I have had the squeaky tob problem for a while and occasional 1-2 grind, but everytime I push in the clutch when backing up or take off slowly and push in the clutch to shift I get a clunking noise. Sounds like either clutch or tranny issues but I am not sure. Usually a loud clunk followed by a lighter one. It's driving me nuts!!! Does anyone have any advice?

Oh, and I am buying a set of shorty headers wondering if the JBA's are really any better than the bbk's? I have seen dyno info on the bbk's but nothing on the JBA's by themselves. I could get the chrome bbk's and save some cash but I worry about rust and them not lasting. Anyone know? Thanks to anyone who can help in advance.

why dont you just safe some more money and get the mid-lenght or Long tubes?
You wont get much with shorties, just my 2 cents

I know, but wouldn't I have to cut my pipe or buy a shorty pipe? And if so, how much is that gonna cost me? I would like to make this as cost friendly as possible, so right now I have shorties on my list.

depends on the mid pipe you want, bassani makes one that mates with their mid lengths. it would definately be worth the wait to get those or some lt's, much better use of money IMO

are mid length headers legal in massachusetts, will they pass insepection and smog testing? and is bassani the only people that make them? does anyone have a link where to get them cheapest?

Yeah, but your talking 600+ for the headers and whatever the mid-pipe is gonna cost, I really don't want to spend that kind of money right now and I want to finish my exhaust. I have read tons of stuff about how much better long tubes are and I wish I would have known that before I bought my mid-pipe. Plus I live in Vermont and my car is lowered, I am not sure how low longtubes hang but I don't want to deal with any issues like that at all.

patience, patience. you don't wanna have to do a job twice cause you were impatient. been there done that & paid the bill - twice. & you can get LT's way cheaper than 600. you can get the lt's & mid-pipe for that if you look around

all my cars have been lowered (1 1/2") that i've had LT's on & the only scraping problem i've had was on the mid-pipe cause i didn't tuck it up far enough. i jsut put on a coil over setup & i'm even lower now with no problem. only problems with scraping i've ever had was going over unusally tall speedbumps

DEFINITLY save your money up for long tubes. With the amount of money and or time it will take to install shorties, its just not worth it for the power you get

I just finished installing LT's and a matching catted H pipe and the outcome is amazing. the power and the sound are not to be messed with. Best part was is i was patient, looked around and found a set of BBK LT's with a matched catted H pipe for 450 bucks used w 8k on em. Best part is i found them right here on Stang Net classifieds!!!

I live in MA too, as long as your check engine light is off you will pass emissions

as for the lowering problem, my car is lowered 1.5 inches all around via Eibach's prokit..the LT's do not hang down low like they do on the 5.0 cars and I have not had a scraping problem as of yet

besides, you can always sell the mid pipe anyways

LTs are definately worth it, and I believe you get what you pay for so I shyed away from any that were on the cheaper scale, but its your money do what you want. you can usually get a short x-pipe that fits the LTs for $240 or less (mine cost that much but it was from SLP).

People ask me about my exhaust setup all the time, there's not any other model stangs in my area with LTs so I like it a lot.

Okay, I will hold off on the exhaust and look around. I would like the slp fittings but I can't find them in my price range. Do you think it would be cheaper and better to cut the existing pipe or purchase new stuff and sell the old? Thanks, it sounds like the shorties are a complete waste of time and money. How much lower will the mid-pipe hang with the longtubes?

Do you guys know about the clutch or tranny issue I am having?

Do they ever get under your car and give it the visual, i failed once for an off road x-pipe, they visualed it and the guy was screaming at me, i just don't want to go to the work of putting long tubed and a catted mid pipe and not be able to pass emissions, are they technically legal or not, does anyone know?

as long as you have catalytic converters and the check engine light is off, there is no reason you wont pass

I have talked to a couple of small garages who do inspections before i even considered doing the LT install for this very reason. They all told me the same thing i said above

thanks dude... I might have to invest in a set of longtubes and a mid pipe how loud will my car be then?
