Couple questions from a newbie

1. I heard there are three codes to a 289 with three different amounts of HP, where do I find these codes and which is which? there is 200, 225, and 275 if I remember correctly.

2. How many liters is a 289? I think its 4.6 but I am new again

3. Does anybody know where to find brackets/wiring harnesses to put a CD Player in a 1966 Coupe?

4. Last thing, looking for a few items for my Mustang. Does anybody have a full rear disc conversion set up for sale. or a dual quad carb/intake setup, or a 4v carb/intake setup for sale? Would be looking for Edelbrock.

Ok, many questions! First, welcome to the stang world! Next, 4.6 is about a 289...but lets stay pure and keep calling it a 289....4.6 or 5.0 are modern motors! There were 3 versions of the 289 in the sixties. C code, A code, and K code. The c and a codes were basically the same. c code was a 2bbl version and a code a 4bbl version. The K code was a rare hi performance version that was pretty exotic for the time, but by todays standards was still pretty tame. They were rated at 200, 225, and 271 hp respectivly. But these figures were flywheel and a little hopeful at best. Next single 4bbl vs 2 4bbl setup. There are a few people that are into the multi carb setup, but in my experience they are a lot of work for what you get. A single 4bbl carb that is tuned right will give you a lot of umfff and be a lot cheaper then a dual setup.

Ok first of all, go look at your Vin# on your door sill, you should see a letter 5th in from the left. depending on your letter, will tell you what motor you had from the factory. A 289 is about 4.7 Liters. The 4.6 is the new Mod motor that is very different from the 289/302 small block. As far as the cd player goes, I would contact the brand of the deck and see if they sell a wiring harness. Are you willing to pay full or are you looking for a deal on a intake/carb? Summitracing.com and Jegs.com provide a wide range of performance intakes and carbs. If your looking for a cheap used set up, I would check out Ebay.com you may also find your cd player harness there. Welcome to the hobby and site. Good luck.

I seriously doubt there will be a harness to wire a CD player into a 40 year old car. They are easy to wire up though, everythings color coded. You can do your own ground wire, acc lead, and switched hot wire. Antenna wire just plugs right in. Speaker wires are a given, easy to figure out. Crutchfield has excellent service and tech help if you get in over your head.

If you end up getting a new carb/intake setup, you can get that stuff from auto zone or advance auto for what Jegs and Summit sell it for. Be prepared to do some tuning/tweaking to get the engine running right after the swap. Since intakes don't really wear out, you can save some money on e-bay or by looking through classifieds. Be cautious of stripped threads, cracked/broken corners, and water corrosion. If you can rebuild a carb, money can be saved if you buy used and rebuild/inspect it yourself.

There are a few rear disc conversion kits available, the complete boxed packages are pricey, look to master power brakes or SSBC, they have websites with pricing. There are alternatives using custom made brackets and junkyard calipers and rotors. This can save some substantial money, but may cause some headache depending on how 'swap savvy' you are.

WELCOME to the world of spending money, I mean, mustangs.

One bit of info, the 260/289/302 motors are all the same motor base. A 260 V8 was put in EARLY 65 (like early 64 actual) stangs before being replaced by the 289 in later 65 (later 64 actual) and the 302 in 1968.

The 289 comes in three flavors.

C code 2brrl 289 - 200hp
A code 4bbl 289 - 225hp
K code 4bbl 289 (other goodies on top of the 4bbl) - 275hp

Just for flywheel guesses on stock motors. My stock A code 289 that was in my previous 65 FB made 141hp at the wheels.
