Crane 1.7 RR pedestal mount install questions

Hey all, installing some crane cams 1.7 pedestal mount RRs on my AFR 165 heads (#1472, Pedestal, 60cc, do not require hardened pushrods). I have stock cam, stock pushrods. Following Crane's directions and some I found on here, I feel like I did everything right...(used 18-20# rocker pedestal torque instead of 25-30 Ft. Lbs which AFR says)

I did not use any shims though, which might be "common" with the stock cam still? Also, when the a cylinder is at TDC I can spin the pushrod around.... is this normal? Does everything sounds okay?

Nope, should NOT be able spin the pushrod. I'm battling the same issue. Borrow, buy, or steal an adjustable pushrod Measure the size you need. Should fit snug. The stud does NOT have to be extremely tight. I think it's like 15-20lbs. You know, get it where it's on good and then quarter turn I guess. Try the shims. They make a difference between a couple millimeters.

You know the pushrod is to big if you try and start the car and the engine keeps cranking but no fire/start up or idles poorly. To small if you can spin the pushrod or makes tapping sound when running. Basically having a big rod (no pun intended) keeps valves opens too long and opposite for too short. I would imagine smaller than what u need is more dangerous than too big.

The directions that came with my FMS rr said you should be able to spin the pushrod with your fingers at zero lash. Go to Crane Cams web site, they have directions there.

You should beable to spin them in your fingers, but have zero lash, meaning they have no play up and down between the lifter and rocker arm.

Well guys I am running into some issues as well but with 1.7 crane cam RR pedestal mounts/afr185's. I've readjusted my valvetrain 4 times, and theres no way around to just having to check your Pushrod length. My motor fires up great but sounds like sewing machinex10.

sewing machine = ok... tick = not adjusted right.

Thanks guys for the info. There is ZERO play up and down, it's just i can sping them around...so all should be good then. we'll start it up and see how it goes. Thanks

I would suggest getting a shim kit before start up. Sounds to me like you need shims. I needed them with my stock cam/AFR 165's.

I do have a shim kit already..just haven't used it. I'll have to put some on and see what happens then, again I've never done this....

I was (still am) a rookie with the rocker thing, but you will learn. From what I have read, if you can't spin the pushrod freely, the valve train geometry could be off. I had to use a couple of shims on some of the rockers, and only one shim on the others. I just swapped to a TFS Stage 1 cam, and now I need different length pushrods. It never ends!
