im going to have a coworker extend my wires on the adapter harness. i read that your suppose to use a filter capacitor on the 12 volt supply if the power wires are extended. is this a must. does it have to be sodered to the red wire on the ignition box.

Where did you read that? I remember it saying to use the cap if you use a nitrous solenoid off of the stage limit.

The cap most likely is used to snub switching noise from the field collapse of the coil magnetic field. This is sometimes called a fly-back voltage that can be much higher than the 12 volt source. I would think a forward biased power diode would make a more effective snubber. In fact Ford did this on the IAC solenoid and on the AC field clutch. I wouldn't fret over it.

I'm (and I think everyone else) is assuming that you are extending the adapter harness that connects to the coil and from the coil plug. If so, no cap is needed, according to your own words - "if the POWER wires are extended". I have never heard one way or another on this.

So going off of my electronics background, If you are extending your power wires, than I'd do the cap. Crane is specifically pointing out that you need one, so do it. It's there to filter out noise picked up by the power wires. It's possible that Crane found problems be being caused by glitches. An automobile's electrical system is one of the harshest environments for electronics.

It's not necessary, but it may effect it's performance. I suppose that it's possible that a glitch could cause the processor in the ignition to hang and reset. This may cause a few to many sparks to get dropped (not triggering coil) depending on how long it takes the processor to detect the locked-up state, then reset, and then get started back up working. MAYBE...

i called crane and they told me to install the capacitor.i have another question. is there a tool to get the wires out of the connectors? so i dont have to make the hole so big in the firewall. the guy from crane told me it came with the ignition. but i dont see any tool to compress the prongs so the wire slides out.
