Crappy day at Woodburn

Any of you were out there tonight may have seen me (the maroon stang overheating and getting jumpstarts in the staging lanes). Man what a crappy night.

My first run, I spun the tires bad, was pinging like crazy, and didn't quite shift right, and ran a 15.1 (which incidentally is the best time in this car). So I get kind of excited. I figure I'll let some air out of the tires (they were at 40psi) and back off the timing, and have a decent run.

Oh not at all. My car overheated in the staging lane. So, to keep it cool, I ran my (new) electric fan that I'm regretting. Well, that cooled it down, then started to draw the battery and killed the car. I got a jump start and by the time I got up there, the motor was cool, and the battery was still low but workable. I took the timing back and ran it.

I launched great, took off and it was ping city. I backed off it at the end of the track. ET: 16.5 :fuss:

That wasnt the worst. I overheated again in the staging lane, and put a timing gun on the car. It sometimes idles up and down, between 800 and 1200 RPM. Well, today I found out when it does that, it takes my timing up 4 degrees. So, my timing was set at 12, but fluctuating up to 16 (hence the pinging). I took the timing back down to 10, figuring the worst it would go is 14 degrees.

I ran it a third time and I killed it half track. It started pinging hard, so I let off it, then the temp shot thru the roof, so I killed it and coasted the rest of the way. I ended up running a 20.78. Thats gotta be the lowest time on stangnet!

All in all, a crappy day, and I wont be going out saturday. But, it was still fun, believe it or not. Back to the drawing board for sure!

I pulled the spout, but it was at idle, I didnt take it above idle. Never thought of doing that to even it out.

I also should mention that I bypassed my air pump recently. I havent throttled it hard since doing that, so that may have something to do with my pinging as well.

naw, bypassing the smog pump wont do anything for pinging. Just bump up the idle a bit and make sure you really are where you think you are. Double check the marks on the balancer too...if I recall there are a few batches of numbers and personally I would black out all but the realistic ones in the batch you use. If you are using an advance timing light, mark out all but 0 degrees. Its too confusing when your in a hurry.

I dont recall, did we ever wide band her? I dont remember doing any tuning, but my memory sucks anyway:) It has a fuel pressure regulator, right? It would be a good idea to make sure the fuel isnt the problem before playing with the timing. Set it to 10 degrees and get the fuel sorted out first, then throw timing at it.

Jeff is right on the money with his advice. At PIR tonight, there was a gentlemen in a fox GT that had a horrible nitrous backfire. My rooom mate and I talked to him and looked around under the hood. Other then some EGR damage, an intake gasket or two and a ruined K&N, he faired pretty well. That is what happens when you run 12 degrees of timing, 100 shot nitrous and 87 octane. Crappy lesson to learn! Anyway, don't worry. Your stang will have it's problems ironed out and be running strong in no time!

You know, while we are talking nitrous.....

Jeff and I stayed till 11:30 last night working on the naws. Got it all on, and everthing ready to go except tuning. Tried to talk him into going for a pass and instead he simply told me no! patients grasshopper. Tommorow we will tune it safely with the wideband. People are scared of nitrous because they dont take the time to do it right and blow things up. Nitrous isnt dangerous if used properly. Its the people that dont listen that learn the hard way.
If the fox is the one I think it is, he was warned by Chung that tuning needs to come first and it didnt.

I believe you guys did do a wideband on it. One of the Jeffs did a street tune on it, and dialed in the fuel, and set the timing at 12deg. It's run great since, in fact, I haven't had it ping before today. For all I know, I could be looking at some bad gas as well. I will run this tank out and then set the timing a little above idle like you said, and do some timing adjustment.

I think an electronics replacement is in the works as well, may go with a unilite and 6AL and that should solve that timing adjusment issue (thats how I'm justifying it).

if your gonna do electronics...please please please call us first and ask. Dont just hop on Summit and go wild:) I think our recommendations may surprise you and will save you some dough. Team secrets...cant reveal too much on a public forum. :D

I'm never afraid to listen to someone who knows more about something than me. So when the time comes I will be making that call. :hail2:

You can keep it in the potty room, thats what we do. Then, just in case we run out of T/P...lmao. Seriously, it is a great place to get a deal, but I have seen cars BUILT out of summit catalogues and they never turn out like the centerfold cars they show :D And if I see one more stang with a powerpipe with a whirlygig inside it "to improve milage" I will explode. Just know the direction before you start price shopping. I will send you a PM and make a recommedation....and let you shop from there.

 Thats funny. Today I was in Schucks picking up some stuff, and the guy at the parts counter I chat with from time to time started pitching one of those. It was the "tornado" or something like that. A little peice of tin made into a turbine of some sort. He was like "yeah man this will probably shave a couple tenths off your time". Saying the crap about air molecules breaking apart.

I laughed a little bit, and asked how much it was (sheer curiosity). 69 bucks! I told him he could keep the sixty-nine dollar peice of folded tin. "Its a big secret. You wont see any of these at the track" he says. I think I know why.

yea...thats right up there with the electric superchargers...."No! these are the REAL ones!"...."1500 CFM" lmao; Riiiiiight! I would like to laugh at the grounding kits the Imports use....but they might actually be on to something :rlaugh:

PM sent

Could very well be the one. Blue/gray with some primer on the passenger side door, all ford stickers in the corder windows, owner in his mid 20's, looked like an NX kit, basically stock engine, 10 holes in front, cobra r's in the back.
