Cromoly full floater 9" housing from Schreiner, $799?

Hey all,
I'm researching, but in no rush, 9" rear housings, and this caught my eye in another thread. It looks like a pretty good deal - 31 spline axles, 9" housing, cromoly tubes, full-floater. They are custom widths as well, so I could fine tune wheel/tire spacing in the rear to get it spot-on. Seeing as I'm looking at 500hp down the road, in a 3200lb+ car, and want to do it right the first time without totally breaking the bank, this looks like a good compromise. The car could see a drag strip or race track sometime down the road, and will have a truetrac/T2R/Black Gold torque sensing diff, haven't decided on the chunk yet.

That looks like a great price. The only thin I would ask is how thick their sealing surface is for the 3rd member. Curries are pretty thick, and the stuff we just got from S&W was HUGE. I've got a stock one shortened and after a few months of racing it start to get wet.
 
Good question - forgive my ignorance, I assume with a thin one, there are studs mounted in thick steel, but the space between the studs can distort if there is flex or distortion in the pumpkin? Heh, I think I should be OK if it can withstand a few months of 10secgoal chasing his goal. :nice: My drag racing plans are pretty unambitious and I would have to think of the whole cage mess if I get even in the 13s, with a convertible, I believe.

Your right, it does flex, causing a leak. BUT also with the leaking, the deflection there also means the tubes are slightly twisting around, possibly putting the axles in a bing.
 
Anybody else want to chime in? I assume that since this is from a company doing off-road stuff as well, that it is designed to carry a lot of weight, and sometimes a ton of loading on one wheel. I don't doubt it will be great from that perspective, but from a perspective of drag or track racing, there would be a lot more fore-and-aft torque on the axle tubes from acceleration and braking than on a 4x4 - think lots of traction at the tires than a 4x4 that is in dirt/mud.

I guess the next logical question would be - does the fore-and-aft flexing of a rear housing mainly affect the tubes or the pumpkin? As I understand it, the tires are using the axle and bearings to provide this force in a conventional semi-floater, but a wheel plate in the full-floater. It would seem like the tubes are doing the work, so cromoly tubes are great, and the way the suspension is mounted to the chassis. But flex at the pumpkin is caused from the interaction of the axles, diff, and driveshaft/yoke, so the more traction, the more deflection there.

yeah, I do understand the point about getting the axles in the bind. Wonder how rigid their center section is? Maybe I'll post over at vintage-mustangs or corner-carvers as well.
