I recently had a local muffler shop cut off my catalytic converters from my '89 LX 5.0 convertible. All I know is that he bored out the front converters and completely cut off the back ones. Now whenever my car warms up the check engine light comes on. So far I haven't noticed any major problems. I get about 20 mpg, but I was getting better than that before (about 22mpg). A friend suggested that it might be because my oxygen sensors were removed. Should I do anything about the oxygen sensors or am I worrying for nothing? Any help will be appreciated.

If the O2 sensors were removed, it will send a code and make the car not run as well (probably rich, if you're getting less MPG). There are MIL eliminators you can use to keep the codes from coming up, or you could just get the sensors put back in, if they are actually removed in the first place.

yes put the sensors back in. u can get weld in bungs to reinstall the o2 sensor. without the sensors the car runs in "limp mode" (figure of speach) computer relies on o2 sensor 4 feedback to adjust fuel curve and other features.

Thanks. I'll talk to my muffler guy and see if he can do it. It really pisses me off that he cut them off in the first place. :notnice:

Since they are cut off do you have them? If not make sure you don't get charged for new ones.

No I don't have them. I just figured that since he was the one doing it, he knew what to do. I hope this doesn't turn into a big world of crap. He did it even though it was illegal. I paid him cash to keep the taxes and the government out of the equation. It was a lot cheaper than buying an h-pipe and paying for the installation, but now I kinda regret it.
