Customizing old exhaust to fit new tri-ys

So I got around to seeing how my new tri-ys would fit after I did my engine/engine bay painting this winter. The problem I have is the old exhaust is for the stock exhaust manifolds and my new headers aren't even close to fitting.

So I need your opinions on what to do. Do I:
Cut and modify my old exhaust to somehow fit the tri-ys?
or
Pay extra and bring her to a muffler shop and have them modify it for me, so it's done right?

I tried measuring the diameter of the exhaust and it's either 1.75" or 2". I've never heard of 1.75" diameter exhaust so it must be 2" (someone tell me how to measure it correctly?). I bought my headers from CJ Pony Parts and their description says, "The primary tubes are 1 1/2" , the secondary tubes are 1 3/4" and the collectors are 2 1/2"."

Cut your old pipes a few inches to the rear of where the tri-y collectors will be. Then bring it to a local muffler shop after you have the headers bolted up ( open header muffler shop runs are a blast ) and let them connect them. I also highly recommend installing an "H" pipe just behind the collectors. This will smooth out the pulses and quite it down some. You've likely got 2" pipe on your system, not many shops would use 1.75" pipe for duals. The 2" will be fine for a small block.

I have The same Try Y's in my stang and from CJ'S
DO yourself a favor and get 2-1/2 inch exhaust or you wont be happy with the headers. With the mods you already have and in the future , the 2 Inch exhaust will kill the horse power you trying to get. Summit racing sells a kit just for the 65 mustang, Pipes and your choice of Flowmaster Muffler, I have the American Thunder and they sound great! Just like the classic muscle car.
You might still have to bend some pipe to connect them to the collectors so take it to the muffler shop to finish or do it yourself if you can.

Yep that will work to, and a good price. I dont know what it will sound like with those mufflers, maybe a ricer sound, dont know I went with the Flowmaster FLO-17273 and
made my own GT tail pipes.

Those are a little out of my price range. I thought that seemed like a good price $132 shipped, then I looked at the 40 series flowmasters and they are like $60 a piece! If I want nice mufflers they would cost the same as exhaust kit. hmmm, what to do.

Would it make a ton of difference in power and sound if i just used my current 2" exhaust instead of upgrading to a larger size? Would it be cheaper to have an exhaust shop make me an exhaust from the headers to right before or after the axle?

Edit: Another thought: What if I just made my own custom exhaust. Buy enough pipe for after the headers to just before the axle, then have the mufflers exit before or after the axle. That way I would only have to have a minimal amount of pipe bent. I would also add a x-pipe or h-pipe. It seems to me that that would be the cheaper route.

If you can do it yourself then go for it. The 2 inch pipe is a little small but on duels it should be ok

If you're good with welding, you could do your own.

If you buy kit from Summit, be warned. the sound from those cheepo mufflers might not be what you want. I was dissapointed with the Thrush turbos that came with mine. It sounds like a tractor. But I don't have headers yet either.

Check ebay for flows, they sell for $40 a piece.

When you have the muffler shop put it on tell them to cut a piece to connect the two duel pipes, This crossover piece goes about a foot or so after the header connection. or buy one and have them put it in.

another question,
I was reading the instructions on installing the headers and it says to use Black RTV sealant around the welding rings and gasket. Should I use sealant on the gaskets or not?

That's what I have on my '66 (Patriot Tri-ys, Summit 2.25" exhaust, summit x-pipe). It did take some modifications, but I am happy with the results. Take a look:

So i'm pretty much retarded. I just went and measured my collectors to make sure they were 2.25" but their not. They are 2.5", i dont know what i was thinking. Good thing I caught my mistake.

I got to looking at the Flowmaster American Thunder system and its only $330, compared to $240 for a kit i made up. So I am probably going to go with the flowmaster kit.

I got a question though, how does the exhaust connect to the collectors? In their picture on summit I dont see a flange on there. I've tried calling summits tech line and all i get is a busy signal. Will there be any fitment issues for connecting to the Patriot Tri-y's?

From looking at your pics and from how my tri-y's fit on my Ranger, you're still going to have to fab more pipe to connect the two. That "H" pipe isn't even close to a bolt on to the tri-y's. You'll either have to bend pipe yourself or get a muffler shop to finish it.

Yea. The left side pretty well points straight back, parallel with the frame, but the right header points towards the driveshaft at about a 10 degree angle, and I think down slightly.
