Im getting the flowmaster delta series ll catback for the v6. I saw a thread where a guy cut his y pipe and they welded them straight back. Would this sound better? what do u think?
I'm not exactly sure on the effects on sound it may have, but I would guess it would sound a little better. Plus you will get better flow without the 2-1-2 piping.
I guess it really depends if you want the kit to bolt up to the Y-Pipe, or if you want to cut and add a X or H pipe. The cheapest way would be to cut the y-pipe and weld straight on which is what I did. Its mainly gonna be a issue on if you want to spend the extra money for a X or H pipe.
No i'm saying that it would have better flow with OUT the Y-pipe. Sound would probably be better too I would like to think. Right now I still have my Y-pipe but I'm looking to get either an O/R H-pipe from MAC Performance, or have a muffler shop just fab up a couple of pipes from the headers to the current exhaust.

Without a constriction point on your Y pipe, you will get better flow, therefore an added horse or two and a fraction of a mpg. You have to have a friend at a muffler shop to get your cats taken off, or even to get an off road pipe put on... they're illegal for street use. you have to have a farm use license to get the cats taken off, or have it as a strictly racing car.
X pipes sound better than H pipes, I have a mac straight flowpath set of mufflers. 2.25" x pipe (cats still on) and then 2.5" tails. it sounds nice My friend said it sounds like his jet boat.
I heard a guy who took his cats off, it sounded like a f'in rice rocket around 3,000 rpms. If you want to get it louder, get yourself some high flow cats. i'm about to order mine
i used to have a 2000v6 and i was trying to decide whether or not to just weld in mufflers or cut the y-pipe and get all new tubes. eventually i went with cutting the y-pipe, i DID NOT cut out any cats and DID NOT get x-pipe and got all new tubing from the cats back (true dual). i had a gt bumper put on first so that the pipes could be placed correctly( i think i got 2 or 2 1/4" tubes cant remember, whatever was stock to fit the cats and 3.5" tailpipes with 2 flomaster 40's mufflers). I was pretty happy with the sound. it wasnt exactly a v8 but i had compliments that it sounded alot like one. IMO i would do that and you should be pretty happy. I think the installation w/ the mufflers and tailpipes was like 425 or so. That is prob gonna get you the best sound out of a v6 for the cheapest. Good Luck!
If I get the H-pipe from MAC, I'd do the install myself. It's onyl a bolt on situation, just like the Y-pipe cat back systme from them that I got when I first got my car. I'd like some high flow cats with an x-pipe, but it costs twice as much, and funds right now are tight. Maybe I'll just have to wait.
