Cylinder Balance test w/code reader problem......

I just tried tried running a cylinder balance test with a code reader on my 91 5.0 and the engine shuts down when I press the test button.....Anyone ever have this problem before and what do I do to make this think work?
 
Cylinder balance test:
Warm the car's engine up to normal operating temperature. Use a
jumper wire or paper clip to put the computer into test mode. Start
the engine and let it go through the normal diagnostic tests, then
quickly press the throttle to the floor. The engine RPM should exceed
2500 RPM's for a brief second. The engine RPM's will increase to about
1450-1600 RPM and hold steady. The engine will shut off power to each
injector, one at a time. When it has sequenced through all 8 injectors,
it will flash 9 for everything OK, or the number of the failing cylinder
such as 2 for cylinder #2. Quickly pressing the throttle again up to
2500 RPM’s will cause the test to re-run with smaller qualifying figures.
Do it a third time, and if the same cylinder shows up, the cylinder is
weak and isn’t putting out power like it should. See the Chilton’s Shop

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire
or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter.
I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

IF your car is an 86-88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method.
There is no functional check engine light on the 86-88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

89 through 95 cars have a working Check Engine light. Watch it instead of a test lamp.

Do a compression test on all the cylinders.
Take special note of any cylinder that shows up as weak in the cylinder
balance test. Low compression on one of these cylinders rules out the
injectors as being the most likely cause of the problem. Look at cylinders
that fail the cylinder balance test but have good compression. These
cylinders either have a bad injector, bad spark plug or spark plug wire.
Move the wire and then the spark plug to another cylinder and run the
cylinder balance test again. If it follows the moved wire or spark plug,
you have found the problem. If the same cylinder fails the test again,
the injector is bad. If different cylinders fail the cylinder balance test,
you have ignition problems or wiring problems in the 10 pin black &
white electrical connectors located by the EGR.

How to do a compression test:
Only use a compression tester with a screw in adapter for the spark
plug hole. The other type leaks too much to get an accurate reading.
Your local auto parts store may have a compression tester to rent.
If you do mechanic work on your own car on a regular basis, it would
be a good tool to add to your collection.

With the engine warmed up, remove all spark plugs and prop the
throttle wide open, crank the engine until it the gage reading stops
increasing. On a cold engine, it will be hard to tell what's good &
what's not. Some of the recent posts have numbers ranging from
140-170 psi. If the compression is low, squirt some oil in the cylinder
and do it again – if it comes up, the rings are worn. There should be
no more than 10% difference between cylinders. Use a blow down
leak test (puts compressed air inside cylinders) on cylinders that
have more than 10% difference.

Maybe my code reader is junk. Here's what happens when I try and run a KOER test...Plug the code reader in, turn the engine on, turn the reader on, pess the test button, the motor just about dies, I hit the throttle, and no codes.....not even the cylinder ID code....well once the cylinder count code pulled 8, but that was it.....the reader wasn't pulling anything. I just finishe my 2.3 to 5.0 on the car and am just trying to check for bunk sensors or anything I might have missed.....Am I missing a step in the KOER process? Is it normal for the motor to die when the test is initiated? Thanks for the responses guys.
 
This might help someone figure what my prob is. I get a code 67 and 29 in my KOEO test. I have an AOD and don't have A/C. I've read that you can't run a KOER test if you run a 67. According to the 67 code definition, my Neutral Drive Switch in open or failed. Any other ideas?
 
Code 67 - clutch not depressed (5 speed) or car not in neutral or park (auto) or A/C in On position when codes where dumped. Possible neutral safety switch or wiring problem. This code may prevent you from running the Key On Engine On tests. You can generally ignore this code, since it has no effect on engine performance.

The computer wants to make sure the A/C is off due to the added load on the engine for the engine running tests. It also checks to see that the transmission is in Neutral and the clutch depressed (T5, T56, Tremec 3550 & TKO)). This prevents the diagnostics from being run when the car is driven. Key On Engine Running test mode takes the throttle control away from the driver for several tests. This could prove hazardous if the computer was jumpered into test mode and then driven.

The NSS code 67 can be bypassed for testing. You will need to temporarily ground computer pin 30 to the chassis. Computer pin 30 uses a Lt blue/yellow wire. Remove the passenger side kick panel and then remove the plastic cover from the computer wiring connector. Use a safety pin to probe the connector from the rear. Jumper the safety pin to the ground near the computer.
Be sure to remove the jumper BEFORE attempting to drive the car!!!

Code 29 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is an electronic sender mounted on the speedo pickup gear on the trans. It works the cruse control for both 5 speed and auto trans cars. The VSS is used to tell the computer to speed up the idle as you slow to a stop. This helps keep the engine from stalling when you slow down for a stop sign or stop light.
Check to see if the electrical connector is plugged into it. Clean the connector & contacts with non flammable brake parts cleaner prior to replacing the sensor, as that may fix the problem. The sensor cost is under $30 and it is easy to replace.
 
Grounding the 30 pin was the trick! I just read about it in one one of your previous posts and there you throw down your knowledge and help me get my KOER done! Here's what the scanner pulled: 12 (RPM's at about 9k...a bit high), and 41( bad O2's). My IAC might not work cause I got it from a friends 95 leftovers, and I'm pretty sure my O2's are junk cause they came home in my pockets from the junkyard. Thanks for the advice! Now I'll be able to sleep tonight.
 
i've ran this test too, and i'm just curious what exactly the results mean? how and what exactly is it measuring? if it comes back clear on all 3, is there any need to have a compression test done (like if you think you have a bad head gasket can you still pass the code reader test) ?
 
The CBT lets you know if you have a non or insufficiently contributing cylinder. Passing generally rules out bad ignitions (with issues pandemic throughout the RPM range), injectors, a total lack of compression, etc. It's just a whole lot more accurate and safer than doing the old 'pull one plug wire at a time' method (this would pull spark obviously, while the CBT pulls injectors one at a time, noting the RPM drop per cylinder).

You can easily pass a CBT with crappy compression so doing a compression test and/or leakdown test are always worthwhile.
 
I'm actually running the test to give me an idea if it's time for an injector swap. They have about 80k on them and I'm kinda under the impression that one or more is sticking. Although the KOER test did flag my O2's. I'll run the test tomorrow morning B4 I start painting the basement and post the results.
