Cylinder Heads for 393w Stroker Engine?

AFR 165cc or 185cc cylinder heads for a 351w to 393 stroker engine? Should I go with 58cc or 61cc?

I have my original set of '69 351w cylinder heads. If I were to get these heads professionally ported to the max, would spending $1300 for AFR's be worth it? I understand I will lose about 40lbs of weight off of the front end. I have no money in the '69 351w heads. I already did a gasket match on the intake side and got a quote for $300 to finish the porting work. What do you guys think?
 
Are you also thinking about going with turbos? I thought I seen a post a while back when you where talking about turbos for your car, Yes, No, Maybe so ?? My memory isnt that good anymore. If you are then I would base my purchase on if you decide to go with turbos or not. If it was me I would stay with Iron heads simply because of the price. I can find a better way to drop 1,300 bens into my car.
 
AFR 185s would be the mininum I would put on a 393.
As for the combustion chamber CC, that's going to depend on your pistons.

If you going to get serious with this motor, you actually might want to consider larger cylinder heads. For a moderate street machine the 185s will provide acceptable results.
 
I went through the same question with my new motor. Decided to go with the 408. I researched this quite a bit and ended up going with the edelbrock vic jr's. Most people recomended the 205's for mine too but I just couldn't afford to spend that much money right now and you will loose a little on the low end with such a big head. The Vic jr's outflow the 185's by a little bit right out of the box and they are the same price. But they have alot more room to grow in case I would need more. :nice:
 
I built my engine based off a MMFF article on the 393. They dynoed it out at 505hp at the crank, and this was with Canfield 190 heads. I went with the AFR 185's because they are very comparable to the Canfields, and I had them in two weeks.

505 horsepower is plenty for the street...at least I think so.

Hey dolfan, I was just in your area a few weeks ago. Flew into laughlin for a weekend. Awesome area. Was going to try to make it to see the london bridge but never made it. I would love to hear more about your car and engine combo. Sounds awesome. :nice:
 
TFS " R " heads would require custom headers where the Victor Jr's would accept a standard 351W header. I used Victor Jr's on my 426 Windsor ( which BTW is for sale for $5500... brand new, never fired.. has all the best stuff ) as they were IMO the best head for the $$.
 
Take a look into some of those new pro topline heads. They have a 200cc runner version that would be about perfect for you. I know either summit or jegs has them, can't remember which one. I've heard those are some meaaaaaaan heads.
 
A lot of different heads listed here..... lemme add one more, the kaase/jegs heads.... they're very expensive and offer high flow rates
i don't know that i could justify that kind of cost...
what rpm range are you going to run? the higher it is, the bigger ports/valves you're gonna want.... for that cid, i would go at the very least 185 and more reasonably 205 (AFR)....

Personally, I think the "R" head will make more power, but they do have the header issue. Victor Jr's are great for the money. If you have the money the AFR 205CC head looks great, too.
 
Wouldn't the TFR "R" series heads be for high RPM engines? My car will be for the street. I want to maintain the low end torque, I would guess 1500 to 5800 RPM. The guys at AFR said to use thier 185's with an Eldebrock Vic Jr. RPM performer intake. They said the 205's would need to rev to about 3500 RPM before they will start to enter their power band. That would be too high for the street from stop light to stop light. If I were to use the 61cc 185's, I would need a dished piston to make 10:1 compression on the engine, right? Is this best. My Comp Cam XE268H flat tappet cam will have about .512 of lift on the exhaust valve. That is the highest I can go with a flat tappet cam before getting into vacuum problems. Will not do the roller conversiondue to extra cost and labor and really not worth it in my opinion. Anyone use the AFR's? Are the springs and misc. hardware good? Help putting this 393 stroker engine together is much appreciated. Any more ideas?
 
Yes, I am using the AFR 185's with the 61CC chamber. I have a dished piston from Probe, and I am sitting at 9.87:1 compression after finalizing everything. The AFR's were compared against every other aftermarket head in a VERY comprehensive set of articles done by MM&FF, and they came up the ultimate winner.

In my opinion they are the best head on the market. When I was researching cylinder heads, I kept coming back to the 185's for the exact same reason you are talking about getting them. The produce well up to 6500 RPM, and the torque is killer from 1500 on up.

All the hardware was top notch, and my machinist went through them and told me that the set up and assembly of the heads was perfect.

I have the 351W stroked to 393 C.I. The pistons are Probe "Sportsman Race Series" (SRS) -15cc dish, part number 10684 . My cam is a custom grind solid roller, from Cam Research. 230 duration at .050, with 585 lift. It's a single pattern cam.

With the 61CC head, you should be at around 9.8-10.1.
