Damage report from November's accident (modem burner)

The video did not link very well to this site so here are some pics.

Basically, the damage will cost at least $15K when all is said and done, including $5K in parts alone (then overseas shipping and labor)

Destroyed include the following new parts:

Global West L11-Cat 5 rear leaf springs costing $850 for the pair
Global West rear shackles costing $200 for the pair
TCP spring plates: $120 for the pair
1 pair Koni racing shocks: $270 for the apir
2 Proxis T1-S tires: $275
1 Vintage wheel works Vintage 45 16x8 wheel: $250
New exhaust with nice X-junction I put on only a few months before: $1K

Other damage includes the drive-line, the transmission, the rear axles and differential. I need a new door shell, a new frame rail, a new rear quarter panel, new rocker panel, new front and rear valances, new spoiler, seat frames are both broken, and lots more. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The rear wheelhouse is destroyed and this is where the body detached from the frame, so I got that going for me too.

Ouch! What happened? I missed that part.
The damage doesnt really look THAT bad, but then it can be pretty hard to tell from pictures sometimes. Judging by the condition of the wheel, Id say it took quite a hit. Theres also a lot of global west stuff, and that gets pricey quick. I wish you the best getting it fixed!

Howdy neighbor. I am originally from Farmington Hills (11 and Inkster). I was going over a highway overpass with a long turn at about 30-35 mph. I was coasting through the turn because it had rained earlier and the temps were just above freezing. As I came out of the turn into a straight part, I hit the accelerator and instantly went sideways and then straight down the embankment and across the 2 lane highway I was about to get on (where the speed limit is 75 MPH!!). I skidded sideways into the curb and the rear wheel took all the force of the impact, tearing axle and leaf springs right off the car.

To answer your question Max, the impact was directly on the wheel. This drove the axle into the differential like John Henry hammering a rail road spike into tie. The rear axle housing might still be good. Those things are stronger than hell.

Dood, seeing yer car like that makes me want to cry. I remember when you posted about the accident a while back. Sorry to hear about all that man. Did you decide to go a head and fix that bad boy ?

I might as well. I estimate that I put at least $40K into the car. At this point, it is worth only the value of the engine, the torque converter, and the 4 wheels (I just bought a replacement rear wheel). My options are to

1. Sell those parts for what I can ($6-7K) and crush the car or
2. put $15K into it and get it back up to speed

I am going to go route 2. It sucks but it is the only way to protect my investment. Maybe "protect: is the wrong word as my investment is pretty much gone. Perhaps "recoup" is a better choice of words. If I spend $15k, the car will go up to $40K or more as I will be putting better parts in than what was damaged, like for example, currie rear end to replace the stock one.

It does suck (in the pejorative sense of the expression) but it could have been worse. My car could have looked like that picture Frode posted. Or worse yet, I could be paralyzed or my wife dead.

I am thankful to be alive and grateful to be blessed that I can write a check for $15K and start fresh.

The car will be better than it was.

I have one only it ain't cheap. But like they say, good ain't cheap and cheap ain't good.

I am on the way to recovery, having ordered $3.5k in parts since Monday: New Global West L-11 Cat5 springs and Koni shocks $2000 in parts from Laurel Mountain, and a new Currie rear axle housing.

next up is a new exhaust system (I am thinking about the Magnaflow 2.5 inch stainless steel kit), a new steering wheel (I ripped the Grant Collectors Wheel apart with my bare hands during the accident), transmission parts to rebuild the tranny, a new alum driveline, and new headers.

It's only money and you can't take it with you. Right?

Boy does that bring back some memmories. Hang in there though, I'm into mine for about 18k so far but since I got hit by someone I have another 12k or so from my settlement to go. Mine seemed to get morte cosmetic damage to your structural but it look likes you had some hidden rust that may have contributed to it coming part too. You are on the right track though I think, I'm building mine into twice the car it was as well and making a good situation out of a bad one.

I slid sideways into a curb at 30-35 mph with all the impact of the collision going directly to the wheel and axle. That is a hell of a lot of energy for any car to absorb. The axle was completely torn off the car. The body shop guy who will be doing the repair said that the only reason why my car wasn't torn in half like a loaf of bread was because of the global west jacking rails and sub-frame connectors.

Still, I am lucky to be able to fix it and even luckier that nobody was hurt.

that's the only reason i'm glad the Mustang shock towers are as flexible as they are. i smacked a curb at about the same speed when i was in high school (same car i have now) and bent 3 wheels, the front swaybar, the passenger LCA and nicelittle crack in the passenger shock tower that i didn't know was there until several years later. once we found out it was there we fixed it and did it right instead of some the hack job crack welding jobs i've seen. anyway, if it wasn't for the flexible shock towers and the LCA my car would looked like a sideways taco too.

edit: oh yeah, i forgot, it ripped the passenger side upper ball joint out of the socket!!!!!!!! that is a freaky sight let me tell ya.
