hi, im skipping around to different forums on the net to get the broadest opinion on the v6 exhaust as possible. what ive learned so far is that you cant acheive a v8 sound but you can come close to it. So basically im asking,.. what exhaust system can you use to get the highest quality sound out of a v6 on all rpm's with an x or h pipe? Exhaust for a v6 is a hard topic and many just give you there opinion on the exhaust they have, but if youve heard many.. and one stood out let me know ,.. thanks.

Def. an X-pipe. someone told me the way our V6's fire (the order and whrn the exhaust is released from the chambers) that the x pipe is better than an H.

Random Technologies has come out with Catalytic converters that function like the factory ones but flow like straight pipes. (will pass the "sniffer" test of inspection)

after that i guess it relies on who you get your mufflers and pipes from. Borla, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, etc...

H-pipes and X-pipes do nothing for the V6. They don't help with power, and they don't do anything for the sound.

The 3.8 has simultaneous exhaust strokes in both banks, so there is zero flow through any crossover pipe. V8s are different, since they have alternating exhaust strokes, and a crossover helps with scavenging of the cylinder that has finished its exhaust stroke and is starting the intake stroke.

crapola

You have not heard my car or seen teh before and after dyno sheet!

It is louder, meaner and more hp/tq.

As Skymarshall posted, there is no real performance gain to be had simply by switchng to an X-pipe or H-pipe with the 3.8L or 3.9L engine in an otherwise basically stock V6, because no two cylinders on the same side of the engine fire in sequence. Fact, not opinion.

That is why fabricating a dual exhaust midpipe behind the stock cats provides just as much performance gain as installing an aftermarket catted midpipe. Of course, going with a O/R midpipe is a different matter, whether on a V6 or V8 engine.

Straight thru, keep the cats, Magnaflow mufflers....thats what i had on my 6 and many commented on it being an 8, untrained ears, but it is close to what your looking for. no need for a midpipe due to even firing order and all that that was mentioned above. and no drone while driving.

I am just an old fart who has had several beautiful old Mustang's and presently a pristine 91 5.0 LX. My wife drove a 97 5 Speed v6 for 4 years with the intention on giving to our son when he was old enough. Well he drove the car for 3.5 years and put dual exhaust on in which the pipe was split behind the cats. He had magnaflows and they sound terrible. But he would not listen to me.

He just bought a 94 GT and now i have the 97 V6. Don't laught it gets me out of a Taurus Wagon. The 5 speed is fun to drive. Well, i converted back to the original single exhaust and guess what. The hill leading up to my house use to require shifting into 1st gear. Now i can pull it with ease in 2nd.

Duals look good, but to keep the power at low end get a single muffler with two outlets.
