It's to cut down on emissions. When you let go of the throttle it creates a vacuum. This vacuum pulls any fuel residue off the intake walls into the engine, causing a (short) increase in emissions. By closing the throttle slowly (computer does this) this won't happen.

ok this is a new one on me because my 97 does not do this. It idles down rapidly just as my old fox body 5.0's did.

I had the same problem with my 98' a couple years ago (idled down slow, and would hang at high idle some times). Any way, it ended up the throttle body was bad (butterflies were not closing enough). It idles perfect now.

I have a 4v 4.6 and I notice it takes a lil longer to settle down into its constant sub 1grand ideling home. The old 5.0 would drop back to idle alot quicker, may have something to do with the type of flywheel right??

It's normal...but there's an easy fix for this "Throttle Hang" on the CSVTs [I wouldn't know the proper method for Mustangs because I've never tried it]...I've never heard of any bad side effects with this quick-fix [restrict airflow in the by-pass hose] on CSVTs.

As you can see, getting the proper sized hole in the restrictor is a trail and error sort of thing.

My father and I also have the same idle issue... its normal. His N/A 94 GT does this along with my SC 87.

my 98 does the same thing. hang around 1000 until you stop then it goes down to idle.

Im use to my 96 probe GT, after getting into that from my cobra it seems like that 2.5 v6 revs like a crotch rocket.

Why is this a big deal to fix anyways? When my A/C is on, sometimes the RPMs will linger around 1400rpm for a few seconds after I come to a stop. When the A/C is off, it usually lingers around 1000rpm and drops to idle a bit quicker.
