I still need advice on upgrading from the original alternator. 65, 289, auto. I am not running any high power stereo but may end up with more stereo, AC, and better lights. Do single wires work on the old beasts? If so who has advice on a vendor. Jegs has one in a "Jegs" brand that looks good.

Thanks

Brain-dead simple mod, I bought a 1-wire powermaster and did a write-up. Well sorta, my page has too much on it to be a good reference for the 1-wire upgrade.

Basically you just connect the single wire to a lead on the starter solenoid where the juice can get to the B+. Cut/insulate/hide the rats nest of wires from the old alternator/regulator and you are done.

I have an MSD distributor and 6AL ingition, as well as a latemodel starter (no more solenoid on the fenderwell) which meant I did not have to figure out what to do with the other wires so for that part I cannot help you. My suggestion is that you go to a late model starter at the same time as the late model alternator.
