did anyone buy a cheap intake?

Many on this board say that metal CAI tubes get hot. Some say that plastic tubing is the best way to go (besides that ugly ass stock rubber crap) ... but the majority feel that buying a K&N drop in replacement and removing the air silencer (as previously mentioned) is the best 'bang for your buck'. I am making my own out of stainless pipe and 45 degree silicone cuplers .... it's really a matter of personal preference. The only reason I am making mine is because the rubber thing looks horrible. And I might gain 1 hp.

The silencer is a piece of rubber that is attached to the big round piece of plastic that your air filter is in.

Using a 5/16 wrench or socket, remover the bolt holding the air box to the fender.

Gently pry upward on the airbox assembly until it is out of the car.

Take a look, you'll see it. Here's a 'how to install mac CAI' from mustangworld, FWIW. May help you understand further... click

Yes, it will still make noise and supposedly function as good as any CAI you can buy. That's what most people here say.
