Hey guys, this past weekend a couple friends and i did an H/C/I swap in my 89 GT. I did TFS twisted wedge heads, TFS stage one, and an explorer intake. I also put in 24# injectors, new lifters, and TFS pushrods, with a new timing chain. One of my friends did not mark the distributor when he took it out, i think this is the problem but i will let you guys diagnose it. WHen we start the car to try to time it, it runs very roughly and wants to stall out. It back fires into the intake with numorous popping sounds. I am pretty sure i have all the vacuum lines hooked up but the explorer intake was a tad different so i am not sure. Also i bought bosch spark plugs and i am not sure TFS recommends these, could they be too short? Do you guys think i have a timing problem or do you think it is something else? Thank you for you help guys :nice: Also i am back up at school and the car is sitting at home, so i can't do anything to it right now.

I would just set the #1 cylinder to tdc, and put the distributor in and try to set the timing again. I would agree thought that the distributor sounds like the problem. Other than that, maybe check for any vacuum leaks, and fuel pressure.

Thanks alot for the input guys! I have a fuel pressure guage and it was reading 40 psi so that is right on. We put it on tdc once and it didn't really do anything but the thottle cable wasn't hooked up and that is why it would die right away... duh on our part! But yeah, we all thought it was timing. Jo_885o, so you say to change the spark plugs? I was wondering if i bought the wrong ones, i didn't think it would make a difference that is why i bought bosch. I will buy the ones you say. Thanks guys

The spout is a connector on the distributor that adjusts the timing electronically. It can advance or retard the timing depending on different signals to the computer. This should be disconnected when the timing is set, but then reconnected afterward. If your car is backfiring, then it sounds like the distributor is retarded to much. Timing should be around 12 degrees BTDC. Also, did you get a new MAF calibrated for 24 lb injectors. Not having a MAF calibrated for these injectors will cause it to run rough as well.

I have a C&L mass air meter calibrated for 24# injectors. I got it from a friend who was running 24# injectors and he didn't have any problems with it. 12 degrees BTDC, i will write that down. Thanks alot!
