I have a 96' GT'. was driving it and started hearing funny whirring noise from the back, pulled over and little bit of smoke was coming from the rear end, luckly I was close to home nursed it home. Found out it was low on gear oil in the rear and figured I toasted the gears. So I went ahead and pulled off the cover, but they look pretty good, no shavings, smells burnt but nothing looks bad. I know the yoke seal is gone that is where the oil drained, so could that whirring noise be just that seal heating up? Don't know much about rear axles so any help would be great, don't want to just replace the seal put it all back together and have to take it apart again.

ok i need to tell a story related to this.

a few years back i got a mach 1 in that was doing the same thing. and Ithought i could rebuild it. i could not even get the pinion out. i hammered and hammered on it. air hammered it. everybody in the shop took turns hammering at it. never got it out. we had to order a new housing.
