Did I break it?

Hey Gents,

I'm installing my headers and as part of the process I removed the dip stick tube. I've been trying to reinstall it with no luck. I'm about ready to toss a lit match at the car!

When I removed the dipstick tube, I wiggled it out and it came out with ease. but now I can't get it back in.

Please take a look below with what I have left.....oh and while it was out, i decided to freshen it up by repainting it.

No don't look broke to me. Should just pop into the little hole there. Make sure you are going in at the right angle

I agree not broken. coat it with a little bit of motor oil, don't soak it and push it in. might have to wiggle it alittle but it will work it's way in.

before I posted i was trying to find a picture of a dipstick tube. this is the best I found. I noticed it has two rings or lips on the bottom where it goes into the block. I only have one. and when I look at the block, I see a silver ring

Mine looks exactly like yours does, I have never seen the double lip like the one in that picture.

i did the same damn thing when i put my shorties on. just yanked right out. you didnt break anything, it just sucks to try to find the little damn hole

While it is unlikely, make sure there is no dirt/grime in the hole before you try and install the dipstick.

It's all about the angle getting it back in.
It's a serious PITA sometimes.

I hate to say it but it could be broken. I have a dipstick from a 1993 T-bird. It has the double rings or flanges on the tube. I measured the T-bird dipstick tube and the entire length of the tube was 17 3/4". That is measuring tip to tip not along the length of the tube. The length of tube below the second ring is 2 1/2" So if your tube lenght is 15 1/2" you might have a problem. FYI the T-bird tube had two diameters below the second ring. The part that fit into the block was the diameter of of the tube above the block but the last 1 1/2" (the part of the tube closest to the oil in the oil pan) is smaller in diameter. I mention this because: if the tube is broke and you try to extract it you could push the broken part down into the oil pan.
Also the T-bird dip stick had a "T" handle that has ENGINE OIL written on it. Most of the Mustangs dipsticks have the yellow loop type handle. IIRC the Mustangs dipsticks has an "O" ring on them ,the T-bird dipstick does not. I hope this helps

Hey Guys,

Guess what....i did break it. after trying to get it in for about an hour, I realized there was a piece inside, the second ring. I extracted it with a an extractor bit and bought a new ford racing one that is pictured above with the two rings.. man what a learning experience!

Getting the new one in was a real PITA!!! I ended up buying a crows foot socket set and used the 7/16 foot socket and tapped it in with an extention! That took me another hour or so to figure that out!
