A couple of months ago when I installed my cams I was reinstalling the crank pulley. The bolt was too short to reach the threads so I got my old UD pulley bolt, since it was longer, put the washer on and cinched the pulley down then put the regular bolt on. Guess where I found the crank washer? Still on the UD bolt in my junk bin.
I was pulling the crank off today to determine a clackity noise that I thought was coming from the timing chain and found the screw up. The crank pulley was on pretty good because I still had to turn the pulley puller pretty good to remove it but there was probably some movement during operation (and several runs at the track).
My question is did I screw up the main bearing if the crank wasn't on tight? What kind of sound would a bad main bearing make if it were bad?
Dammit...

I doubt you did any damage to it. If anything, the pulley may not have been on quite all the way which would caused some random misfire codes.
I did get a misfire on initial start-up but nothing since. It wasn't moving around or wobbling any...so i'm hoping it didn't do anything major.

Yes...I found that out later and will replace it when I get this thing back together but what, other than sounding like a smartass, did you contribute to this post?Kilgore Trout said:I am pretty sure that bolt is TTY and should never be re-used

I believe I did. The one thing that I knew was that you should not re-use your crank pully belt. I refrained from commenting on that which I did not know. I have no idea if you screwed up the main bearing...coramprat said:Yes...I found that out later and will replace it when I get this thing back together but what, other than sounding like a smartass, did you contribute to this post?
I pulled the cover off and everything seems fine. I think not having the crank tight against the timing wheel is where the noise was coming from. So I'm getting it back together and hopefully it will be OK. If not...well I guess I can find me a used Cobra motor somewhere.
Kilgore...sorry I came off as an ass. I was pissed at my own screw-up and it sounded like you were trying to be a jerk. If not, I apologize.

when i installed my cams i took my time & made sure EVERYTHING was done perfect. well i put everything back together & buttoned everything up. only thing left to do was put the crank pulley on & route the belt. well i went & grabbed the crank pulley & hear the , ting, ting, ting, of something tin hitting the ground. i picked it up & low & behold i am holding the crank trigger wheel

The stock crank bolt is not TTY. Steeda's instruction say nothing about replacing the bolt with a new one.

I almost did the same thing as you, but I realized that I forgot to put it on after I put in like 3 or for 4 bolts. So I pull it off put that trigger wheel back on, bolt the power steering pump in, then I realize oh great I forgot to put in the timing cover bolt that is behind the power steering pump, arghh!

Even my haynes manual specifically mentions head bolts as tty, but not the crankshaft bolt, so unless you have some documentation somewhere to back it up, I still say No it isn't.
