Im looking into getting a V8 engine out of a 92. What difference is there from a 89? Are they still roller engines?
If I get the engine would it make sense to put in a 303 cam?

They are the same engines. Late in 92 they started with the hyper pistons as opposed to the forged they used before that. As for the cam it really doesn't do all that much performance wise(it actually could hurt performance) to install a cam without heads and an intake.

Very cool. Now what if I installed a 303 cam and a set of GT40 heads that I see advertised for $699. What hp would be at the flywheel?

that's a lot of dough if they are iron heads. 96-01 5.0 explorers came with gt40 heads in 96, and the gt40p's 97+ and can be had from just about any truck yard for $200 a set

Based on my sig. If I get the used engine put in the 303 cam and a set of powerheads or thumper heads would I put out over 300hp at the flywheel?
If the pistons are not forged how much abuse will they hold up to?

mark, on a budget, just pick up a used 96-01 explorer engine. they have the gt40 heads, as mentioned, and an intake identical to the gt40. they can be had all day long at junkyards with low miles for $650. swap in a mustang cam, and stiffer springs, and if you have the $ a set of roller rockers, and you'll be damned close to 300 horse for under a grand easy.

I was looking at the B303 cam.
I just got a unexpected check in the mail. Im getting a used 5.o complete from intake to the pan and im going to swap over my externals. Im going to remove the smog crap. Im going to order thumper combo #3. I want the 12's badly. It comes with the b303 cam. The whole mess with the engine is going to cost within my budget.
I have a 97 explorer in the garage. I think my wife would get pissed off if she went to start it and the engine was out.

well, I had an unexpected purchase this weekend. went out on a whim and said what the hell.

$700 67kmile longblock, 97, gt40p's

Is there a specific place that sells these engines?
Is the only difference with the gt40p and Y, iron and aluminum?

any truck/4x4 place will sell this engine, prices very from $500-1000 tops, and they'll pull it for you.

a few things you NEED to change, front accessories, timing cover, mustang exhaust. Oil pan, pump, and pickup need to be swapped to mustang style too.

ford sells a nice conversion kit if you want new stuff, since they have leftover new explorer 5.0's that a lot of mustang guys sell

FMS-M-6670-A50 $225.00

you SHOULD change the cam and valve springs, its a truck cam and won't rev high. These motors respond well to a HO mustang cam and stock mustang springs. ON my bro's explorer engine he's running a HO cam, tfs springs, and 1.7 rr's.

expect low 13's, high 12's with the proper bolt on's of course.
