differential dampener necessary? & bushing replacement?

hi guys,

i think i have a 79-93 8.8" rear axle (it's 4-lug) and it has what you guys call a differential dampener attached. is this honking piece of metal necessary?

I have removed the "dog bone" from the differential of all my mustangs. Couldn't tell a difference.
