got my 79 taillights in today, and its gonna be ALOT harder to fabricate them so they will fit than i had imagined.... has anyone ever done this before?

lol yes i am, its not the bolts that dont line up, its the lights. there are 4 lights on mine, and only 3 on the 79.... and they dont even come close to where the holes for the lights are

Are you just changing the lenses or the whole housing?

the lenses are completely differnt, i was planning on changing the whole housing eventually. Really i would somehow chage the lenses if i could, i just LOVE the way those lights look personally, right now i have cobra tail lights.

I was thinking about doing this conversion yesterday but realized it seems like alot of work.

I love the '79-'82 taillights.

yes it seems to be alot of work. i was lucky enough to find BOTH lights for $10, so i go them, i think i might use a dremel and cut the front off and make a "lense" if u will, so that i can put this "lense" right onto my original harness without harming my cobra lights, im gonna see what that would require next time i am home. i really want these on, they are sexy sexy sexy

the lenses dont peel off like the later models? my 93 lenses came right off when I put a heat gun to it.

no, they are much shoter, the lenses come right off but the sizes are not the same, they dont go along the whole housing

You have to patch up the holes and cut out new holes.

LOL it's like a mental block that some folks just can't get.


'79s have a large black/blank section on the inside by where the plates go (which i think should have NEVER gone away)

Then they extended the lights all the way accross in '83 like this:

Basically where it looks like backup lights on the newer tail lights, that whole section is gone. The housing on the '79s is completely different and so is the back of the car where they bolt on. I had this same plan to put them in mine to match the '79 nose but realized that it was much more of a project than i was willing to undergo.

(by the way, those lights in the pic are 99% mint and may or may not be available for sale if the price is right )

yea they are different but not THAT different.... only real difference is position of lights, lense size, and width of the houseing this can be done, im seriously about to cut up the 79 lights and piece together a lense i can attach to my newer housing... looking at my possibilities right now



btw if u got that pic from craigslist, you are looking at my lights.

Why, for some reason, do I actually like those lights better than the LX tails?

lol nice chop! i did one myself on the gt, and thas when i fell in love, btw they are coming along pretty decent right now, i think i might get them to fit by tomorrow evening

right now im kinda prototpying it, but if this fits and works im gonna make it real nice with some added fiberglass and stuff.

Ok excuse the **** quality of the pics i had my phone handy...and well im lazy, any ways i just finished my first prototpye of the light and it works!

doesnt it look SEXY

Brake light and turn signal are in the same light area, but i may move the turn signal more towards the middle as i figured out a way i could after i finished.....

the reverse light was a BITCH, it still isnt mounted right, im gonna have to mount it to the chasis of the car and let the light reflect since i spent 6 hours today on a harness that attached to the housing, but in the end the light was still to long... here are some pics of the ghetto steps i took to do all this
