I think most of you guys checked out my past post about my 289 blowing up. The blocks might have a crack in it, and the piston is fused to the head. Anyways, heres what my idea for the resureciton is, seeing that i dont have a ton of money right now to fix it. Find a used 289 block, or a new cast block, stuff it with my old cam, get new strong rods and pistons, stock crank, try and get the piston off the head if its possible, and use the same heads i have now, along with all the intake and exaust and ignition stuff i have now.
How much would it cost to find a 289 block, stuff it with my old crank, but with new rods and pistons, and the same cam i had?
Could i find a 302 block and use that with the parts from my 289? Ive heard that the 302 block is exactly the same except the stroke was longer. So, could i use a 302 block with 289 parts?
Last option, try and find a short block, and top it off with the parts i have. Are there any good 302 shortblocks or 289 shortblocks? For less then 1600?
Thansk guys, i want this car to be alive again.
Mike

How much are you looking for?

Okay guys, found this over at jegs:
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=4520&prmenbr=361

Basically its a shortblock, for $1300,2 bolt, ford racing parts.3.00'' stroke crankshaft, 5.090'' connecting rods, Hypereutectic pistons 9.0:1 compression ratio w/65cc head) Explorer high torque hydraulic roller camshaft,Timing chain and gears.

How would this work with my existing parts? Would my stock heads be able to bolt on to it? and would my other accessories bolt on as well?

I don't think it will have the boss for your clutch Z-Bar. IIRC there is a bracket sold to let you use it though.

Do you have any idea where i can find this bracket? I have a 4spd top loader btw. What kind of front covor would i need? would the water pump, oil pump, off the old engine work?

National Parts depot has the bracket. 7A572-1A 59.95.

It has been along time since I messed with a SBF, but I'm reasonably sure that everything but perhaps the balencer and flywheel will swap.

There are two balence factors for SBF 28oz and 50oz. You need to make sure it all matches........

I think it has to be a 50 oz unbalanced. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, will it bolt on to my transmission besides that and the Zbar bracket?

Since you have a '65 you need to check if you have a 5-bolt or 6-bolt bell housing. All 302s have 6-bolt.

To answer your first question, can you stuff 289 parts in a 302 block - absolutely. They have the same main journal size, bore size, and deck height. However, most of the cost you will find is in rods and pistons so why not go to a 302?

If you decide to use your 289 crank, you will definitely want to have it checked to make sure when the piston siezed, you didn't do any damage to it.

You can build a short block yourself but it is usually best to get one already built unless you find an incredibly good deal on a block, rods, crank, pistons, rings, and bearings.

If you are unable to get the head off of the block then it is probably history if it is cast iron. The cost to fix will probably be more than what it is worth. You will need to see if there is any valvetrain damage as well.

The heads are cast iron. Im pretty sure that the pistons not going to be comming off the head. But we will have to see. As for getting a block and then stuffing it myself with parts that are left over or purchased, i think that it would cost more then the ford racing 302 short block. With that i would also have a hydrolic roller cam, and totally fresh internals. That way i know the engines going to last a while and not have this happen again.
Ive been trying to calculate out everything, and it seems like the built long block 302/345 hp create engine might be the most cost efficient. For $3100, it would be a drop in, and simply a bolt on project.Plus, i would get a new flywheel, which i needed anyways. The only real parts that im wasting off my old engine would be the front accessories. I could still use the starter off the old engine i assume.
The induction side from my old set up could go on, as well as the exaust. Would the ignition from my old 289 work on the 302? im assuming it would, since again they are the same set up basically, just a longer stroke. Ill need to find out if i have a 5 bolt or 6 bolt bellhousing, but if it is a 6, then i wont need to get the adaptor for it to bolt on to my top loader.
I would want to upgrade to a better radiator to handle the larger engine, but thats more of a minor thing then getting the whole set up to work.
Are there any details about the swap that im missing? Can anyone direct me to a site that has some good info all complied together?
Thanks guys
Mike

You might look at:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/crateengine/main.asp

Go down to your local dealer and I bet they will sell the you enginefor less than list, plus you won't have to pay truck freight.

I will have to call them on monday. Thanks for that idea, hopefully i can get them to drop below jeg's price.
What will i have to interms of the distributer? Does that engine come with the balancer and flywheel combo i need? Will i only need to worry about the 6 bolt issue with the trans?
