I've just replaced a distributor on my '73 351 cleveland. i found TDC on number 1 (as it said in hayes book) and everything is hooked up.

But it won't fire. Is the book right? i found an emmissions sticker on the valve cover that said 6* BTDC.

Have i timed it wrong?

Did you get the coil wire seated into the distributer cap and coil good?

Before you removed the old dstributer did you turn the engine over to TDC and check that the rotor in the distributer was pointing to the wire that travels to cylinder number one?

If not, you are going to need to find the compression stroke of cylinder numberone and verify that your timing is not 180 degress out.
