Im Going to take my distributor out to fix the pip(Stator). To put the car at TDC do i turn the car on and turn the distributor and stop when its says TDC on the balancer?Thats when i should pull out the distributor?
Can someone explain how to get to TDC.Do i need a gear puller to get into the distributor?

What should i watch out for when installing the distributor back in the car?

thanks for any help.
Jesse

you dont need to get it to TDC. mark a spot where the dist and block touch and most important mark where the rotor is insite the dist

when you go to stab it back in it will keep your timing pretty close to what it was

as far as removing it theres only the one bolt that holds it down then you carefully pull it straight out. its also a good idea to stuff a paper towel or rag in the hole after the dist is out so nothing falls in there

yup, doesn't need to be at TDC, but i would be a good idea to point it exactly at something so you know exactly where to put it back when you are done. As long as you don't turn the motor w/ the dizzy out, you will be fine. But mark it well, whatever you choose to point the rotor at, obviously something outside the dizzy, like the coil or something.

I mark where it's pointing with tape on the inside of the distributor, then I use a screwdriver to scratch the base of the shaft and the block so you get it exactly where it was. Funny thing is, I did that when Scott and I swapped my intake. I checked the timing tonight, and it's dead on 10° :D

just like the 3 people above me said, there is no need for tdc unless you dont want to mark the rotors location. just so there is no guessing, i make the mark as wide as the rotor. (im sorry if that doesnt sound clear, but that is the best way i know to describe it) just mark on the lip of the distributor where the rotor is and pull it. when you stick it back in, make sure the mark you made lines up the same way and you will be right on. (assuming of course that you didnt turn the motor with the distributor out)

NO you need the pin. The pin is a pain to get in right. You will notice that many reman'd dizzies have a new pin hole drilled in order to save time (this bugs me a lot).

You gotta get that pin stabbed.......

Good luck.

I got the pin in and i put the distributor in but the car wont start i did everything .Could the timimg be off. When i try to start it i get dis like backfire sound but it wont even start.

I notice that the balancer doesnt turn when i turn the distributor. Is it suppose to?

Help me

It does sound like your timing is off (the backfiring sound is an indicator).

The Balancer should not turn when you turn the distributor. To turn the balancer, you have to turn the motor over, and that requires a good bit of force.

You can try rotating the dizzy a little each way while an assistant cranks the motor to see if it will fire. You might have installed the dizzy a tooth off from how you took it out. This is no biggie - just turn the dizzy as if you are setting timing to make up for it.

If this fails, you might have to just manually put the motor at TDC and try stabbing the dizzy there. I dont think it will take this, but just letting you know not to freak if it wont start - it can be fixed.

Good luck.

Age and heat take out PIPs. Also, if the dizzy bushing is getting sloppy, it allows for a lot of run out, which takes the sensor out.

Glad you got it whipped. :nice:
