Do 4.10s ever get annoying?

Well it's not the 4:10s that are annoying.

Have a read crusty...this is from an article on Stangnet's front page.

"Most stock mustangs have 3.27 gears from the factory. I have no idea why Ford put these gears in our cars because they’re awful. Despite what some “experts” might tell you, gears will not decrease your top speed in a mustang; in fact, they’ll probably increase it. If you were to top out your car with 3.27 gears, you’ll notice that the power just stops when you shift to 5th gear. This is because you are not in the car’s power band to pull the car up to higher speeds. Not only will steeper gears allow you to pull quicker, but they’ll also keep you in your power band which will, in turn, enable you to pull stronger in 5th gear; something you could NOT do before. Other experts claim that you will lose gas mileage due to the higher RPMs that your car will now be traveling at on the highway. In reality, you’ll lose maybe 1 MPG at best.

By far, the biggest misconception out there, is that 4.10s are “too much gear” for a car. These people that tell you this are mistaken. Those people are stuck in the pushrod days where the cars can’t rev past 5500 RPMs. Our cars rev to 6000 RPMs for a SOHC and 7000 RPMs for a DOHC. Our torque comes on later than the pushrods, hence the need for the steeper gears. Sure, there are instances where you might want to get a different gear ratio if you have a power adder or are a drag only car, but be it Auto-crosser, Open Tracker, or Drag Racer, do NOT get less than 4.10 gears for a daily driven N/A Mustang."

So cronin...feel free to offer up this "math" you're referring too.

There is no "math" in your statement. You are just quoting something that you have read, I read it too... it is irrelavent to what I said. All I said is that 410's are still an overdrive gear. 5th gear is still less then 1.00-1 with 410's. And moderator, how come he can call me "crusty" and get away with it, but when I call someone "numbnuts" I get called for it? That punk can insult me just because I'm older?

You were the one barking about the math.

And I think the moderator's words on name calling was directed at both of us.

Oh yeah...Cronin...this "punk" is 37.

alright, nobody needs to be doin' any name-callin' everyone's just here to discuss opinions, and opinions vary!

Spreadman, I'm gonna sound like a broken record about that video, but that'd sure be a help to a lot of us!!!!!!!

Have a good one! :D

Okay top half applies to a stock car, modified is different you run out of RPMS with the 2V and 4.10s. Bottom half :rlaugh: " pushrod days were cars cant rev past 5500 RPMS. Our cars rev to 6000RPMs" :rlaugh: :rlaugh: Thats hilarious... I can rev an AMAZING 500 RPMS more.HA HA HA......funny my pushrod engine revs to 7500RPMs, and I STILL say 4.10s are too much for a DD and even for a street car if it has no O/D. 3.80s are plenty in the 3spd auto 66.

I'm goin' with the 4.10's - I had 4.11 in a Corvette I used to have with no O/D and it was horrible to try and drive on the freeway, but if it just had one more gear it would have been fine! The way I see it, since we have a 5th gear, the 4.10's seem natural and perfect!!!!!

Truthfully, right now with the 2.73's my car seems to be TOO high geared, you can't hardly use 5th gear unless your going over 75!!! so dropping the gears in my opinion might actually increase engine life, since it will be in a better rpm range, because as we all know, lugging an engine isn't good for it, and too high a gears can sometimes cause that!

Just thoughts.
