Do all GT rear bumpers need turned down exhaust tips?

I am planning on upgrading the entire stock exhaust system (BBK shorties or LTs, and BBK x pipe and magnaflow c/b). However I was looking for an LX type appearance where you can see the exhaust tips. I guess with the GT rear bumper that doesn't work - so if I want that look, I have to go with either a cobra or LX rear bumper.

Can someone tell me if that is correct, or are there setups that allow the exhaust tips to exit below the GT bumper - I'm thinking that would be getting too low to the ground.

Thanks

Howard

I am running a amer thunder cat back with a bbk x and 1 5/8 ceramic equals, I put a dual tip on each side staight out the back. Looks awsome. The catch is you have to cut your rear bumper to allow the new tips. The bumper cuts easily with a careful dremel. You have to watch out not to cut to close to rear bumper brace so your tips will center. Any exhaust shop should e able to line the pipe up. Also it looks better if you can touch up the yellow plastic after you cut it.

Sorry guys but I can't stand the cut out rear GT bumper look :nonono: . Go with the GT exhaust or get a Cobra bumper. I would go with the Cobra bumper becuase it is less drag as well (doesn't grab all the air the GT one does from being higher), could actually save on gas and increase performance........Alright I ran out of ideas to sell you on the Cobra bumper, just get one...... :nice:

you're probably thinking of something like this. it's just a mac catback. the ball and socket joint for the tailpipes is after the axle, not before, like all others. i just angled it down some. i don't think it looks gay!

I think there talking more like this. This isn't as bad as some of the ones I've seen. The ones that are cut out to put 3" tips through them are just horrible IMO.

look at this, did it myself, always been told they were the best GT cutouts people had seen. More pics at the link in sig.:

Regrettably, my bumper was destroyed in an accident a few weeks ago, so as soon as my parts come in the car will be sporting a Cobra rear, Stalker front, Cobra R hood, and Saleen wing from Cervini's. I always liked the unique look my car had, and alot of people did too, but now I'm forced to go for a new look.

what year was it 86 or 85 gt's have straight pipes little different body style though but might work, I personally dislike the cut outs on a gt bumper so I went with a cobra rear and lx flowmaster polished tails, But if you do so you'll need to add at least another 1-2" to the hangers so it aligns right with the bumber

The 85/86 GT exhaust is actually the exact same as later year LXs. In fact when you order an aftermarket dual exhaust for them you order the LX version.

I was going to say. You could try to score an older GT rear bumper like mine. Hey astronaut, I thought your car was red, that pic looks like bronze and I really like that. I hate the cutouts too, but that shot looks really good how they are tucked in nicely. Do any companies make a rear bumper like the GT bumper that just have smoothed provisions for LX exhaust kinda like how his pic looks.

The car is red, that color is a result of road dust, exhaust soot, and bright sunlight. No company that I've ever seen makes a bumper like that, but an hour or so with a dremel and a marker and you've got it. The secret to making it look good is to add a molding. I used rubber fuel hose, slit it on one side, and fit it to the bumper. It cleaned up the edges, and molded to the tips. The rolled edge tips also help, as they match the shape of the GT bumper, as opposed to regular thin tips which look hack.

I would go with the Cobra bumper , but for now just cut the gt bumper , thats what i did cus i like the sound over turn downs , plus i plan to get a cobra bumper..... but after a while the pipes out the gt bumper grew on me :)
but still am saveing for a Cobra bumper  :nice:

yup gotta go with the LX or cobra rear bumper, unless you want to go ghetto and cut holes in the bumper :p

you could go ghetto and cut holes in it...make sure it looks good though....

but you can also have it custom where the pipes are setup low and ride beneath the bumper.
