Do I Have Gears?

I have the feeling that the previous owner of my car installed some rear gears, the reason i think so is that 1st and 2nd gear are pretty short and on the freeway according to the speedo im going 75-80 and people are riding my ass. The car definently does not feel like its going 75-80 so im thinking its got some gears. What do you guys think? Are these the typical symptoms?

Are you sure it isnt the other way around. For each rotation of the tire, the d/s should rotate approximately 3 1/2 turns if you have 3.55's :stick:

Possibly, I guess I got it backwards, but I tend to drink to much at times :D I'm going to blame it on a combination of that and my dyslexia.

That might not work for our boy. It sounds like he might have an upgraded gear set, without the corresponding speedo. Seeing how he has people riding up on him on the highway and it doesn't seem like he's going at speed reading on the speedo.

Try the counting method.
 
Its real simple, it will take less then 5 minutes. Just jack up the rear end, and while your buddy rotates the tire one revolution, count how many times the drive shaft rotates. ie 1 turn of the tire = 3.73 turns of the drive shaft. It may be a little off if you have bigger or smaller tires, but it will be close enough to tell what you have.
 
A revolution is an angular measure so it's independent of the radius thus the tire size won't effect anything. I say rotate the wheels ten times and count the driveshaft turns if you want alittle more certainty :)

Good point. The difference between 3.55 & 3.73 isn't much. But when you multiply it 10 fold, it makes it much easier to discern.

NOTHING is ever easy when working on a car lol
 
Once you find out what gear ratio you have make sure to buy the correct spedo gear to correct your MPH on the highway. The prob isent that you have gears, its that someone put gears in the car and never changed the spedo gear.
