i was tearing my engine down because i had a blown head gasket and i looked at the lifters and one of them was worn where the cams goes on it. i know i have to replace the lifters but do i need a new cam too? the engine has about 15,000 miles on it. thanks

I think that you should pull the cam and examine the lobes. You can also check the lobes with the cam in the engine. Usually if the lifter gets junked it will take the cam with it.

I would also be concerned that if you have a lifter that died so fast, your engine may have injested a bunch of metal particles all at once. Might be a good idea to pull the pan and check the main bearings. Hopefully someone who knows more than I can comment on this.

well i ended up just pulling the engine out last week. i took it apart to the shortblock so i could clean all the antifreeze out. i examined the cam and found that the lobe was bad too. it was the only bad lobe on the whole cam so i just replaced the cam and lifters and im going to try starting it tomorrow.

Did you have any Metal shavin in oil or Oilpan.

seems I am most likely going to have to do the same with the cam.....

What causes this?>??? anyone?

Usually the lifter stops spinning in the bore, and the cam grinds away on it.

I just did a cam swap on my friend's 350 chev saturday and sunday because of a wiped lobe. The lifter was majorly dished in too.

24 Hours to Re-and-Re lifters and cam in a 350 in a Jeep YJ... Fun.
