Do I need a new engine/rebuild?

As it was mentioned before...purchase a bottle of engine flush. Follow the directions on the bottle then change your oil. That "should" fix your problem.

If the Dist. is installed corectly then it's engaging the pump and you are seeing oil pressure so it's doing something. I just think with that many miles there is a quite a bit of sludge on the bottom of that pan.

First off....How can you not install a distributer the right way??? If its not clocked right the car wont run. No such thing as a tooth off. Only stabbing it in where you cannot properly adjust timing.

Also....phantom ticking is a problem ive had on 2 engines in the past. Until i stopped using FRAM filters. Screw a motorcraft or a wix on there and see if that helps.

Would anyone here recommend me going to a thicker, 20w oil with the next oil change?

Thicker oil is what i tried first when troubleshooting mine. What kind of filter is on there? Bright orange fram?

Random sudden loss of oil pressure isn't the oils fault. I wouldn't change the thickness of your oil. I doubt your oil suddenly thinned out during an intake gasket replacement.

it had a fram on there before the intake swap, now it's some unknown white brand, i think it's a valucraft autozone type; I didn't have the oil and filter so the mechanic probably just used the cheapest thing. The oil is being changed again this weekend, right after the motor flush is ran through it. I'll be using a Wix filter and conventional Castrol GTX 10w30.

Sounds good.....some of those generic filters can fail. Be sure to let us know how it works out.

Something I always do is open the box and use my pocket knife or a pen to check whether the pressure bypass valve is made of metal or plastic coated cardboard. Learned to do this when I had a 7.3 Powerstroke and been doing it since. I recall that Motorcraft, Purolator, and believe it or not, I think even the SuperTech Walmart generic brand use the good bypass valve. Just a little something else to keep in mind.
