Do they make a gear drive for the 5.0?

I am still kinda new to all of this so I thought I would ask here. Last year we finished my fathers '49 Chev pickup with a blown 572ci motor with mechanical fuel injection and gear drive and I just love the whine the gear drive provides.

Anyone know if there is one made for the 5.0 and anyone running one?

they do make them for the 5.0 but some say stay away from them. I think they work fine if alot of guys in there older hotrods run them for years without problems. My boss has a 65 chev truck with gear drive and I thought it sounded supercharged.

I heard that they mess up the computer with EFI causing it to retard the timing. Something to do with the knock sensors. Don't know if it ture, Ilike the sound of gear drives too!

Had a "noisy" gear drive in my old 5.0 and it was pretty noisy(I was running a magnaflow catback, o/r xpipe, and mac 1 5/8 headers) in the car. It pretty much drowned out the exhaust completely. I'd go with a quiet set if I go with a gear set again.

The gear drive doesn't do anything different than a roller chain will. However, with a solid link between the cam and crank you will transmit a lot more harmfull vibrations between the two. Some have suggested that this increase in harmonic vibration can lead to premature failure of the crank oil seal and increased wear on the bearing surfaces. If you search in the summit catalog you will see that there are many choices (brands) of the gear drive.

Personally, I have run one in previous cars and after 3 months of constant driving, the noise became too much to take. If it were me, I would stick to the chain or pony up the extra money and switch to a belt driven setup.

Yea, they sell several gear drives for the 302... But i wouldnt reccomend buying one soley for the "sound". They don't offer much in terms of anything better than the stock chain... but they do seem to cause a lot of problems.

If its the whinning noise you want buy a striaght cut gear supercharger like the vortech I have.. You'll get ur whine as well as several extra ponies

The 5.0 in a Mustang does not have a knock sensor.

gear drives aren't any better than stock chains, I don't see the point unless you want to sound like you have a supercharger when you don't. But I believe thats a waste.

Wow, can't believe ALLDATA would say that! They are usually very very good! I do believe the 5 liter in the Explorers have a knock sensor. Knock sensors are GOOD... And I don't know why Ford did not install one. It will retard timing at the instant it senses detonation, way before the human ear could hear it.

yep, all data lists replacement time and has a picture of it. for all you guys who like useless facts alldata mentions the formal name for a knock sensor as a piezoelectric accelerator accelerometer

Not to sound like a jerk or anything but they have been using gear drives for a hell of a lot longer then blowers or any other sort of supercharger was even a thought of in peoples mind.

I am not a cheap ass who can't afford a supercharger but wants the sound of one, I personally like the sound that they produce by themselves but not at the sacrafice of my motor if that is what it would come down to.

I really appreciate the great information.

I ran the Pete Jackson "NOISY" gear drive set in my motor. No problems to speak of. I took it out after 3,ooo miles as the "supercharger whine" was LOUD at cruising speed with a non-overdrive trans and a 3.55 rear gear.

I'm looking to unload it if anyone is interested... Basically in new condition minus the $220 JEGs price tag.... I'll cut you a deal on it

Just spend the cash on a jessel belt drive and have the option of being able to degree your cam without removing the pump and cover.

As said, a knock sensor is just a piezo sensor. It is able to pick up the acoustics/harmonics of detonation. I also think it would have been nice to have them, esp on the 5N95's (ping machines).
