Dodge Stealth???

I just wanted to ask if any of you all one here had any opinions on these cars I did some reading up but on them but your opinions would be appreciated. I ask because I have a chance to buy on from a relative for a bout 3x less than they paid and from looks alone it sure looks like a pretty cool car. It is 1992 I am pretty sure black on black. The only negative is it is automatic. It just seems like a heck of a deal and they seem to be pretty rare. I know they were not made for long but don't know if that means good or bad. You would wonder why they stopped making them so quickly if they were good cars. Obviously because they weren't selling well but that may not be because they were not good cars. My best guess is they are very good cars, were not cheap to make and were considerably expensive as a result of that and perhaps economic factors at that time they did not have a chance to really sell? Anyway I have a chance to buy this any opinions?? Anyone driven one???

Stealth = 3000gt (pretty much)

I remember once, a long time ago... I visited my father at his tranny shop and there were.. count em.. 5 steath/3000gts in the lot waiting to be fix.

I was like.. WHOA dude.. and dad was like "yea, anything over 80k and they are done."

I actually have always liked the 3000GT VR4's. What's not to like about them? All wheel drive, all wheel steering, DOHC 3.0 Twin turbo engine (320hp@6000rpm/315lbs@2500 rpm) with a 7000 rpm redline, excellent handling, excellent braking and was able to clip off mid 13's at ~ 100+mph in stock form. They like most other turbo's are quite easy to up the boost for cheap.

The reason they dont still exist today is because of the price tag. With a msrp approaching 50k back in the late 90's...it was doomed.

I know they actually share very little in common mechanicly...what I was getting at is they are a dodge/mitsubishi joint venture, awd, heavy and terribly unreliable...much like dsm's. Mechanicly very different...but they are basicly a more expensive version with very similar goals/intentions.

I would take a DSM over one of these any day...they are far too heavy to really get too serious about any form of racing with. Because of their massive curb weigh and awd...they are kinda lacking in the top end considering the horse power.

I dont' see how you figure. The only things they share are both are turbocharged and both have awd. I don't think that constitutes them having the same goals/intentions. It's just one of the very few similaritites they share.

To heavy you say? The same can be said about many a mustang....including the new gt500. That mass however is more detremental at lower speeds/launches than higher. With a torquey engine and AWD it more than makes up for the curb wieght down low. They are certanly not lacking up high either with a redline of 7000 rpm and a top speed of 155+ mph.

Dont' get me wrong, I dig DSM's too...but compared to the VR4's I just consider them economy cars on stereoids. Sure they can be made fast...but so can honda civics.

Both turbo...both awd...both 2 door coupes...both handle decently(though neither of them great)...the last gen dsm's also looked quite similar and they were both a joint venture between dodge/mitsubishi. The way I see it they are just dsm's that are bigger in basicly every way...engine size...twin turbo...heavier...more expensive etc.

Power to weight ratio makes a difference no matter what speed you are going. And yeah...I would agree most new Mustangs are heavy pigs and dispise that about them. Sure stealths are fast down low...they don't have any traction issues with the awd. Like I said before though...they are really not all that fast up top for the amount of horse power they have because of their huge curb weight and awd.
 
Some of them are pretty badass. I live an hour away from the fastest stealth/3000gt in the U.S. Check out www.dynamicracing.com. Even though mustangs have a lot more potential and the stealths have tranny problems with increased power and they cost a lot to mod I still think the 3000gt and stealths are nice cars

As I said before, just because they both are awd (dsm's were fwd with awd option), had 2 doors and had turbo's does not mean they are mechanically similar nor does it mean they were made with the same goals/intentions. I'd say the best comparison between the two would be that of the corvette to the camaro. Sure, they both have 2 doors, rwd and are v8's. Hell, they even shared the same engine…but their intentions and target crowds were vastly different (as was their price). It's just apple to oranges.

Yes, power to weight does have a bearing up high. Drag coefficient has a huge effect as well though, as does h/p, gearing etc. Considering their trap speed of 100-105mph in stock form and their 7000 rpm redline I'd hardly consider them a slouch though. That's on par with the 99-01 cobra's trap speed which (at the time) were known for their quickness up top.
 
2 of my Buddys own a Dodge stelth the other with a 3000gt.. Both have already Replaced Trannys..... the buddy with the Stealth didnt make it over 65k before losing it.. got it replaced 2 weeks ago.. Still haveing Problems!!!.. G/f Bought a Dodge avenger 98... Hoping that it dont happen to her.. (( Most likely it will ))
 
there basically crap.. i pull parts at the junkyard for them alot.. and yes.. i have ALOT of those.. alright looking, but mechanicaly unstable.. i figure oneday they'll all spontaneously combust

As for the Avenger, I has a 97 4 cylinder as a daily driver with a Hahn Racecraft stage 2 kit and have never had any probs with the tranny (5 speed) and the car has 125,000 on it, 40,000 of it has been turboed. If its a 4 cylinder the only things to worry about is they have a problem with the head gasket and the timing belt, a decent head gasket will take care of the problem (its not the same motor as a Neon no matter what anyone tells you, head is backward on a Neon, but both considered a 420A) and the only fix for the timing belt is to replace it every 60,000. If its the 4 cylinder almost everything except the body panels are the same as a non turbo Eclipse.

Talons/Lasers/Eclipses use a 4g63 4 cyl turbo motor and the Stealth/3000 GT use a 6G72TT 6 cylinder turbo, thats the turbo models you guys were talking about. Talons/Lasers/Eclipses don't have the all wheel turn, transfer boxes are different than the 3000GT, and the Stealth/300GT have automatic adjusting spoilers, thats just a scratch on the surface of the differences.

Oh yeah, the 3000GT/Stealth that have most tranny probs are 94-96's, they use a 6 speed Getrag tranny and they never offered a 6 speed in the Talon/Laser/Eclipse except maybe the newest body style.
