Does anyone know WHY you would need an X-pipe for long tubes?

Why can't I just have straight pipes custom welded to the long tubes WITHOUT and "X" or "H?"

I don't believe that its totally necessary, but personnally I don't always like the sound of a totally independant dual exhaust (except on a shelby Cobra ) on a street car. The H or X union ballances any exhaust pressure differences between the two banks of cylinders, resulting in a smoother sound. I'm not an expert on the subject, but hopefully someone can chime in as to how it affects back-pressure. I believe a joined exhaust has less back-pressure due to the balancing effect, but I could be totally wrong on that count.

When I bought my car, it came with independant exhaust pipes. It sounded nasty. There's nothing like the sound of an uncatte h-pipe. Unfortunately, I got the pro-chamber. I like it but not as much as an h-pipe.

If I had to do it again, I'd put an off-road H pipe on it. With the X, for some reason my stang doesn't quite sound like the other 5.0's in town, alot raspier and higher-toned. Maybe its just me. I did actually notice a small gain in the SOTP feel after swaping out the old stock h-pipe though, specially in the mid-range.

NO, it's not. It has the H-design, hence the name. Independant, means that they're straight with no junctions.

Ok. So 95vert did you like the sound of the H-pipe or independant exhaust better? Did the h-pipe take out the boominess? Did the independent exhaust get too boomy?

I really don't know what you mean by boomy, but I just didn't like it. It was too loud and it didn't sound like a mustang. I don't know how to describe it, but I didn't like it all. The h-pipe is deeper and sounds like thunder at cruising speeds, which I love. It has that mustang sound to it and it's not too loud at idle but it's awesome at WOT. I'd take the h over the x and pro anyday. A buddy has the bassani x on his fox, and it's too raspy and not loud at all.

Thanks. Reason I was asking was that I was going to try to save some $$ after getting the longtubes by having a friend weld them independently with custom made piping rather than spending $200 on a long-tube h or x pipe.. I am not going to do that now and just get a smaller H-pipe when the time comes.

Why not have a local muffler shop make you an h-pipe. I know one here that will make one for $80.

x2 if you know the guys that were gonna do the straight pipes, just ask them how much it is to weld up and h-pipe. h-pipes def. sound a lot better than just straight. i also prefer them over x pipes. also, if your lookin cheap i think the summit h is only like $120 but i could be wrong.

Summit has an h-pipe for longtubes? Ok, I'll check. So all the h-pipe is, is 2 tubes with a center tube that has an OPEN connection to the pipes right? In otherwords that center tube is not CLOSED at both ends. Just checking..

You will make more power with a X or H vs straight pipes because of the Venturri (sp) effect. With the exhaust blowing past the crossover pipe it creates a vacuum therefore acutally "sucking" the exhaust out of the engine. Google it for a better explaination.
