Does this look normal?

When I removed the fuel return line hose this was on the hard line. When I look online, all I see is a bare hard line. The reason I ask is I'm having a time trying to get this connected.

I dunno...what am I looking at.

I know it's fuel line...but which connection am I looking at?

It's where the hose connects to the hard line near the fuel filter. Someone informed me that the piece left on the fuel line was suppose to stay in the connector with the hose. One more thing to buy...
