doing a burn out...

...so i did a burn out starting in second gear today and my dad got real upset. i've spent 750 miles breaking in this tranny/clutch set up, and today on my way home from work, i decided to give it a try...

when i came home and told him that i started the burn out in second gear, he got REAL upset and told me to NEVER do one in second gear again.. always in first...

is there any reasoning for this, or is he just being a d*ck?

To be honest what gearing is in your car, what tires, how heavy, what kind of road were you on before you did it?

There is a LOT more info needed to decide if it was smart or not.

I personally ONLY do 2nd gear burnouts at the track and ONLY on wet slicks. When I run street tires I only do a little spin in 1st. On the street/parking lot etc... I would never do a 2nd gear burnout. There is no reason to hit it from 2nd, especially when just doing one for fun.

I would say he might have over reacted, but if you just got the car set up and on the road, a fast way to burn out your clutch, or break something is trying to do 2nd gear burnouts with no water and decent tires.

Just my $0.02 but then again what do I know? :D

she didn't bog what so ever... like, can't really stress it enough how easy she slipped the tires in second, without a wet box or anything.. regular street tires.. regular black top... we have two different opinions here - one saying it's fine one saying it's not.. anyone else want to chime in?

Well you can take the two opinions as you want... We have 8 Mustangs here and been through a lot with them. Not saying it's right, just saying this is what I do, and a few of our cars will break traction through 2nd gear. As a matter of fact half of them on a 2nd gear roll will spin.

A burnout doesnt necessarily hurt the clutch, but 2nd gear is harder on it than first gear, thats a fact.

I'm just saying if your screwing around on the street 2nd gear burnouts are 100% pointless, but you can do as you please.

Don't bother doing that crap. I ruined the clutch in my Cobra doing that stuff. Trying to show off, have fun etc.....It now doesn't disengage fully and I have longtubes, so getting it out is out of the question. I pay Alternative to do that. 300 dollar job turns into 450+ plus the price of a new clutch. I have been limping my Cobra around since 2004. It drives fine, but after it gets really hot, it acts up. Around town it's okay, but not perfect. I can't go to the track, it is totally not driveable at the track right now.

I'm really surprised so many people are advising against a 2nd gear burnout...maybe my car or my method are different but i've been on the same clutch since i registered on this forum and the only time i do any burnout in 1st is if i'm coming off the line and the tires spin, otherwise it's 2nd gear every time.

Are you guys also advising not to do 2nd gear at the track? Why run your engine at 5k to heat the tires in 1st when you can run 3k in 2nd and put less stress on the engine and get the tires turning faster and heat them better?

I don't know where the sound went in this video, but here's 2nd gear for about 1/8 mile, and it didn't hurt a thing.

yeah, i'm in the same boat as you... but my dad swears that it's bad for the trans and the clutch (my argument was that ANY burn out in a manual car is bad for the trans and clutch lol... all i did by saying that was piss him off a little more lol)... he wound up finishing his argument with "just don't do it again!".. and i'm still not sure why.

I do second gear burnouts at the track with my car on wet slicks. On the street or on street tires first gear, but I rarely ever do burnouts for fun. I have more fun trying to get the tires hooked than trying to spin them... But what do I know about it?

Also to note I run a crappy clutch which could be one reason I avoid it. To save my T5 I like having a weak clutch in there, and just avoid the 2nd gear burnouts.

ok well here is my 2 cents.

in the 86 gt of my dads its always 2nd gear dump it...with 4.10's 1 st gear is all around pointless because as soon as the tires are spinning its gonna hit the red. so always second for it.

now with the SC i test drove. ( hope to get it! ) now before anyone yells this guy is cool. it still had the old tires on it. and he said i can do a burnout if i want. =]

so dumped in first. 2.73's in second if you dumped it high it would start spinning but start to bogg down as the burnout went on. then had to down shift to first to keep going.

buddys 89 lx. 331 stroker tfs top end and 3.73's...he always just dumps in in 2nd then shift to 3rd. his stang has no problem keeping them going there.

hell the more smoke the better! do it at whatever your car will take. without blowing **** up though!

What 25th said.

I haven't done a burnout just having fun or showing off for a couple of years now. Usually if I am doing a burnout there is someone next to me doing the same... . At that point its in 2nd, 1st doesn't get the tires hot enough.

Only reason for doing a 2nd gear burnout is for more tire smoke since the wheels spin faster.

At the track, this is desireable to heat the tires up properly, but on the street it's just for show.

Burnouts in generall are usually bad for something on the car.

I've never done a burnout on my '03. I baby it way too much :)

4th gear burnouts are where it's at anyway
